Bones The Complete 8th Season Blu-Ray Review! David Boreanaz & Emily Deschanel Are Back For Another Season!

Starting off in the sea of procedural shows littering the airwaves, I didn’t find myself drawn to Bones at first, even with one of it’s stars being David Boreanaz of Buffy The Vampire Slayer fame. It seemed fairly run of the mill and I unjustly dismissed it. Cut to nine years later and the series is still going strong and I find myself being a huge fan.

Bones was created as a vehicle for David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel two characters diametrically opposed in personality but both wanting the same end result. In lesser hands the series could have fallen into procedural run of the mill boredom, but thanks to some clever writing and an excellent ensemble it has risen above the pack of NCIS clones.

Bones season 8 has just been released on DVD and Blu-Ray and if you haven’t tuned in yet, you might want to start earlier than 8 seasons in. For those of you who love the show, you know the story. Booth (David Boreanaz) is an FBI Agent who solves convoluted crimes often by the book. Bones (Emily Deschanel) is the obsessive compulsive scientist who tries to come up with the logical reasoning behind each case.

The strength of the series lyes squarely on the shoulders of it’s two leads. Both David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel are perfect and their witty bickering still brings a smile to my face even after eight seasons. Emily Deschanel has perfected Bones quirky ways to a point that it’s going to be hard to separate her from the character in her next role.

The supporting characters are used well this season as well. Most especially Jack played by T.J Thyne. His conspiracy theories and various experiments to prove his over the top conclusions proved to be some of the highlights for me this season. I also was so happy to see Cyndi Lauper back as psychic Avalon. She is adorable and her guest spot provided an avenue for one of the best episodes. It allowed for the perspective of the episode to be the victims and it was a nice, if not sad, change of pace to see what happens from the other side of the proceedings.

The one thing I will say that is getting old is the use of the “big bad.” It was used to perfection back on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and basically means having one central villain wreak havoc on everyone’s lives only to be taken care of by the end of the season. It’s hard not to have an overarching mystery but at this point a little shake up in the format would be nice. Season 8 picks up right after season 7 ended with Bones being a fugitive wanted for murder. Really? I don’t think anyone would have possibly thought that Bones would be a murderer.

Still, some of the best and more iconic television series have stalled out after five seasons let alone eight. For Bones to be this well written and acted this long into the game is a testament to the actors and writers because it’s still a pleasure to watch and I look forward to seeing what they come up with in season 9!

The series looks fabulous on blu-ray and the details pop way more than on broadcast television. The detail might be too much for some during the more squeamish parts but overall it looks stunning. It also contrasts nicely from the interior and exterior shots, particularly those of the Jeffersonian Institute.

The special features included in the Bones season 8 blu-ray include a commentary track on the episode The Future Is In The Past and deleted scenes from three episodes. There is also the standard gag reel and Bare Bones: Total Fandom-onium a collection of fan comments. Dying To Know: Bones Answers Your Questions! is a nice mini featurette that has some cast members answering submitted questions.

Overall, while Bones is showing it’s age slightly, it’s still better than most series on television. I would suggest jumping into the series at the beginning rather than starting at the end, but even with it’s increasing age the chemistry of the stars outweighs any signs of lagging.
