Box Office Breakdown! Apes Crush The Competition! Transformers Hold On! Tammy Tumbles!

And the Apes shall inherit the Earth. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opened with a massive $73 million, which is $20 million more than its predecessor. It still has a way to go before recouping its $170 million budget, but I’m sure Andy Serkis is already working on the next installment.

Transformers fell to number two with $16.5 million and a domestic total of $209 million. That’s a huge drop from its record breaking opening and is still $1 million shy of its $210 million budget.

Tammy got tripped up and fell to number three with $12.9 million. But with a small budget of $20 million and a domestic total of $57 million so far, Melissa McCarthy isn’t go away any time soon.

22 Jump Street is still arresting ticket sales after 5 weeks in release. The comedy blockbuster came in at number four with $6.7 million and now has a domestic total of $172 million.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 finally broke even domestically, with $5.8 million at number five. A worldwide gross of $349 million has made this sequel into a certified it.

Earth to Echo held at number six with $5.5 million for a domestic total of $24.5 million. A modest budget of just $13 million has saved this small film from being an epic disaster.

Deliver Us From Evil was cursed, falling to the number seven spot with $4.7milion in its second week of release. When will Eric Bana get the blockbuster hit he deserves?

Maleficent fell just one to number eight with $4.1 million spot after seven weeks in release. Its worldwide gross has reached $667 million. Could Maleficent 2 be in the works?

The indie charmer Begin Again has crept into the top ten at number nine after three weeks in release. Good word of mouth, and I highly recommend this film, has boosted ticket sales to $2.9 million and a total gross of $5.2 million.

Rounding out the top ten was Jersey Boys with $2.5 million. Its domestic gross of $41 million is a wash against its $40 million budget. This one was a real disappointment.

Next week is a smorgasbord of new releases. Disney’s Planes Fire and Rescue is up against The Purge Anarchy and the raunchy comedy Sex Tape. My money is on the violence of The Purge Anarchy for the win. Tune in to see if I’m right.
