Box Office Breakdown! Mortal Instruments Bombs! World’s End Whimpers! The Butler Is Number One! Check Out The Full Recap!
Man,
The box office is a cruel mistress! Who would have though that The Butler would make a repeat stop at number one while the “new Twilight” Mortal Instruments would come in at number three? I didn’t see that one coming!
Although I will tell you that the marketing seemed odd and didn’t make the film seem that appealing to mainstream audiences.

I have discovered I have a new talent – but it’s not predicting the box office winner! I’m going to embrace the suck and see how many weeks in a row I can get it wrong.
The Butler came in at number one again. Go Oprah! The film has grossed over $52 million domestically and I’m sure is headed Oscars way.
We’re the Millers held onto the number two spot for the third week in a row. Perhaps this is a comedy that’s actually worth seeing?
The Mortal Instruments City of Bones came in at number three. Even though it opened on Wednesday, its total five day gross was still less than The Butler’s three day. This is definitely not the next ‘Twilight’ Sony was hoping. Whether or not you liked the ‘Twilight’ series, there’s no denying it was a phenomenon that’s not likely to be repeated any time soon.
Perhaps Simon Pegg’s rude remarks to Star Trek fans cost him some ticket sales. The World’s End came in at number four. It still grossed more than Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz on their opening weekends, but is unlikely to have the same staying power of those previous films.
Planes is till flying high at the number five spot. Disney should be happy with their decision to release it in theatres versus straight to DVD. Good going Mickey!
Matt Damon’s Elysium still has some fight at the number six spot. They should have no problem breaking even with combined international sales.
The indie horror flick You’re Next got an 80% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but still failed to scare up many tickets sales. I think the horror genre has been pretty saturated this summer. Perhaps Lionsgate should have held releasing this until Halloween?
Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters is like a teenager’s acne – it just won’t go away! The teen action hero is hanging in at the number eight spot.
After five weeks in release, the Woody Allen pic Blue Jasmine expanded to more than 1,200 screens this weekend, making its way into the number nine spot, grossing a solid $4.3 million.
Kick Ass 2 got a solid beat down all the way to the number ten spot. Opening week at number two, second week at number ten; are we confident that Kick Ass 3 is never going to happen?
