Castle: The Complete Sixth Season DVD Review! Do Castle And Beckett Have The Same Spark After The Engagement?

There are certain shows and actors that are just destined to fly under the radar. I don’t know what it is, or why it is. However, it happens time and time again. Case in point Nathan Fillion. An excellent actor, huge cult following, scored in Firefly and the horror comedy Slither as well as Waitress. But, whenever I mention his television series Castle… People always say to me, “Oh yeah, I keep meaning to watch that.”

Well, to those people, I say, it’s time! Castle: The Complete Sixth Season has just been released on DVD and let me tell you, if you haven’t started the adventures of Beckett (Stana Katic) and Castle (Nathan Fillion) you have missed the boat! Still, it’s not too late.

For those of you who haven’t seen the series, here is the main plot in a nutshell. Castle is a crime novelist and Beckett is a homicide detective who (at first grudgingly) gets help from Castle on the truly unique cases.

Got it?

Good.

The sixth season opens after the cliffhanger finale. Beckett has just gotten a job offer in Washington D.C. and Castle springs a seemingly left field proposal on Beckett. The premiere, Valkyrie, kicks off with Beckett living in Washington and the realization that Castle wasn’t using the proposal to talk her out of the new job, but as a way of reaffirming his commitment to her. This was one of my favorite moments in the premiere, and both Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion really were outstanding in this moment.

Then there was a time jump. It’s not a few months in the future and Beckett has accepted Castle’s proposal and is Washington in the middle of training exercises. Beckett is learning the ropes of being a government agent and her partner (Lisa Edelstein) is really enjoying pointing that out.

Castle was on a book tour and then came home, missed Beckett and jetted off to Washington to surprise her. Castle ends up sort of getting Beckett in trouble but it all works out, but Castle ends up kidnapped. Whew.

That’s a lot to cram into a premiere with new characters, a new locale and a new engagement. Season six provides some awesome new episodes in the next chapter of Castle and Beckett’s relationship. Some of my favorite episodes are:

Number One Fan: Castle negotiates a hostage crisis and puts himself in the line of danger when he gets two hostages released in exchange for himself.

Disciple: Castle and Beckett investigate a double murder with victims that looks stunningly familiar.

Dressed To Kill: In the high end world of fashion, Castle and Beckett are called to find a murderer after a magazine editor’s assistant is found dead.

In The Belly of the Beast: Beckett goes undercover to stop a drug lord without the help of Castle and under covers a conspiracy.

For Better or Worse: In the season six finale, Castle and Beckett can finally get married but complications ensue when it’s revealed that Beckett is still married.

Overall, I really enjoyed season six and found it on par with the previous seasons. The leads are so likable and easy to watch, it’s almost like seeing old friends every episode rather that a television series. Both Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic are excellent in their roles. By this time they know their characters inside and out. You can really tell in their banter and ease with each other.

The special features on Castle: The Complete Sixth Season include:

Bloopers – I love a good blooper reel, this is fairly standard stuff, but it’s always fun to see.

Cut Scenes – Rule of thumb, scenes are cut for a reason. It’s nice to see, but not to rewatch. There are a few included and it’s always nice that they are, but I like the original cuts of the episodes better. In particular, Always, is better with the original ending.

Episode commentaries – Again, a standard feature that I’m glad is there. The Castle commentaries on each of the DVD sets are always good, and they don’t disappoint here. Nice antidotes from the episodes with some technical stuff thrown in for good measure.

Our Favorite Things and A Day in the Life. Both of these are fun little featurette’s for diehard fans. Again, a few nice tidbits and it nice to see Stana onscreen not playing Beckett.

Overall, I think you’ll be very happy if you picked up this set if you’re a fan. It has all the stuff you would want and some nice bonus features thrown in for good measure. Plus, the quality of the episodes on this DVD set are leaps and bounds better than what is shown on the actual broadcast. That alone is worth it to me!

Castle: The Complete Sixth Season is out now on DVD!
