Depeche Mode – The Delta Machine Tour 2013

One of the most important shows of the year for me was Depeche Mode. They are one of my quintessential bands. They are part of the soundtrack of my life. I wish I had enough funds for all three Los Angeles shows, but alas I could only go to one. I chose the Sunday night show and got an amazing 11th row seat! September 29th could not come soon enough.

The date finally arrived, and I made my way downtown. I wanted to find parking, walk in, and find my seat without crawling over people. I was also excited to see the opening act. To my delight, Depeche Mode chose one of my favorite bands, Crystal Castles, to open. I was ready for a night of music bliss.

When Crystal Castles took to the stage, I was one of few who were screaming and ready for their musical styling. It was odd to watch Alice and Ethan perform without fighting to keep my balance. Normally the crowd at a Crystal Castles show is wild. Alice took command of the performance and as the set progressed had captured the attention of the crowd. As always, “Baptism” got me going. If you have never heard Crystal Castles’ music, do yourself a favor and go to iTunes or Amazon and download “Baptism.” Unfortunately, being the opening band, Crystal Castles was not equipped with their amazing lighting effects, so I was unable to get any clear pictures.

After a break and some last minute settings, the lights went out and Depeche Mode took the stage. After 30 plus years of making music, they are still a force. They walk out and everyone’s eyes are glued to them. The crowd of all ages, races, and styles cheered for the band as loud as they could. It’s friggin’ Depeche Mode! I was so excited to be so close to the band as they performed. Dave Gahan, 51, Martin Gore, 52, and Andrew Fletcher, 52, still have more stage presence and a sound better than any new band of any genre being played on the radio.

The 20-song set was filled with new and old hits. Highlights for me were “Angel,” “Precious,” “A Question of Time,” “Condemnation” (Sung by Martin!), and an amazing updated version of “Just Can’t Enough.”

The guys rocked the Staples Center as if it were 20–30 years ago. Dave Gahan’s deep vocals and hip gyrations kept the crowd moving and screaming the whole night. It was fun to watch both men and women go crazy for Dave. When Depeche Mode is on stage, it is all about the music. There is no major acrobatics to entertain concertgoers. People are there to hear the songs that remind them of their youth, as well as current times.

This was most evident during “Enjoy the Silence,” the bands biggest commercial hit. “Enjoy the Silence” is a song that has stood the test of time and could have easily been released today. It is hard to believe that “Violator,” which contains “Enjoy the Silence,” was released 23 years ago!

Dave Gahan’s and Martin Gore’s vocals need to be heard live to truly appreciate the band’s songs. Their voices sounded strong this evening. If you have never seen Depeche Mode live, make sure you catch them the next time they are in town!
