I don’t know about all of you, but the cranberries have been in my life since they burst into the scene in the early 1990s. Dolores O’Riordan’s voice was at once delicate on songs like Dreams and Ode to My Family and then a powerful explosion on Zombie and Salvation.
I am distraught to hear that at the age of 46 (!) she has passed away. I just can’t believe it. Her music has been with me through so much and I still can’t believe it.
I thought I would share my moments with Dolores and the band as a memory of the hyper talented singer songwriter. I did these as a flashback a couple years ago, but I thought I would share them again in light of her passing.
Now, I have two encounters to talk about with the cranberries. Climbing to fame in the early 1990’s with such hits as Dreams, Zombie, I Can’t Be With You, Linger, Salvations, etc… the cranberries have been one of my favorite bands.
The voice of the cranberries is Dolores O’Riordan, who is just stunning. If you’ve never seen the cranberries live, you don’t know the power of Dolores O’Riordan’s voice. At once haunting and piercing, she has a tremendous power.
Now, I’ve seen Dolores O’Riordan and the cranberries in concert about 10 or 15 times, like I said, I’m a huge fan.
The first time I met Dolores O’Riordan was at a private concert the cranberries did here in Los Angeles. A friend of mine and I scored tickets and a meet and greet. It wasn’t really organized and honestly, I was such a newbie I didn’t even think of bringing a camera! Doh!
Thankfully, another fan did and she sent me the photo of Dolores O’Riordan and I. Now, It was a brief encounter and I got a To The Faithful Departed tour poster signed, which sadly was stolen a few years later. 🙁
Dolores O’Riordan was super sweet and when she shook my hand, I thought she was going to crush me. lol. Such a grip!
We talked about the show and she said, “Yeah, you know as you get older you get more comfortable onstage.” So sweet.
A few years later, Dolores O’Riordan did an appearance on a talk show and after I was able to wait for her. She came right on out and I waved for her. She told me to come over and literally, it was like I was one of the band.
She said, “Boys this is Mike!” after I asked her to sign my Rolling Stone magazine. Dolores O’Riordan’s husband took our photo together and I thanked her. I also mentioned how much I was looking forward to her first solo album.
Dolores O’Riordan and the cranberries are one of my favorite bands to this day, and getting the chance to meet her has been a real thrill. I just can’t express how sad I am that she has left this earth. Thankfully we have such a deep and rich catalog of music to remember her by.
Until next time kids…
