Fanboy Fail Fridays! Pretty In Pinky Edition! Meeting Robert Downey Jr. And Having Iron Man Flat Out Ignore Her! Damn! The Big Diss!
Fanboy Fail Friday! I love it! Well… I don’t “love it” but I love it. Today the fabulous Ms. Pinky is going to share her recent event with none other than Iron Man himself Mr. Robert Downey Jr.
I’ve always liked Robert Downey Jr. back in the 1980s with Soapdish, Heart and Souls, Chaplin etc… I mean I love Iron Man, don’t get me wrong but you know, the classics are the best!
Pinky was one on one with Robert and what happened? Well, since this is Fanboy Fail Friday, I think you can guess!

Hello, my lovelies. Pinky Lovejoy here a bit perplexed about the way the event went the other night. Don’t get me wrong – I’m still THRILLED beyond belief to have finally gotten a picture with Duran Duran’s John Taylor,
but it was the other big name in attendance, Robert Downey, Jr. (who will be referred to as RDJ for the remainder of this article), who left me scratching my head. As I mentioned in my previous “Manic Monday” article, the event was super low-key. In fact, I was lucky enough to get pictures with every single celebrity I saw that was there (with the exception of Buzz Aldrin who I didn’t notice until he was sitting down and it was too late – I think he came in around the same time as RDJ which is why I missed seeing him arrive).
Considering it was an event sponsored by New Directions for Women and most people there (well, the ones who weren’t Duranies anyway) were involved in drug treatment and recovery programs in some way (either as counselors or people who’d been involved with the programs), it was a very casual and cool atmosphere. Still, I wasn’t sure if RDJ would come into the actual reception, as it seemed like he might be “too big” for this type of thing, or if he’d just make his way to the presentation at the theater next door.
As the red carpet was in the reception room, it was possible he’d come in, but I wasn’t sure. I’d only seen him one time close-up at Sundance about ten years ago when he walked past me super fast going into a theater, so I didn’t have any idea what he’d be like. Sure, I’d heard fairly good things about him, but you just never know.
As the reception drew to a close, I heard a rustling near the door and before I knew it, RDJ himself was walking by me. Before he got to me, though, I noticed some security a guard – a super dicky too-cool-for-school guard, I might add – walking in front of him to block people and then saw another one blocking people from behind. Um, was he serious?
The mean guard in front yelled at me and the few girls around me (we were literally just standing there), “PUT YOUR CAMERAS AWAY! Don’t even THINK about it! He is NOT taking pictures tonight!” I was totally confused. I mean, if a celeb wants to shoot me down, fine, but being told I wasn’t even allowed to ask? I don’t think so. I was so stunned I just stood there in awe as RDJ went to the carpet and then did what? Take pictures? Well, that’s odd. I thought he “wasn’t taking pictures” that night. Hmmm. And yet, I watched as he took picture after picture on the carpet. Lame!
I started to think maybe he’d changed his mind, so I positioned myself near the edge of the itty bitty carpet and between the exit so that I’d be right near him when he left. As he finished, I said, “Robert, may I please give a picture with you?” He looked at me and said nothing. He was smiling, but he was mute.
The security guard behind him then said, “Sorry, not tonight, Pinky.” Um, WHAT?!!?! WHY DID HE KNOW MY NAME?!!? This wasn’t the typical security people I’m used to seeing at events, in fact I don’t think I’d ever seen either person before. The whole thing was just bizarre. RDJ then went on to stand in a hallway and talk and laugh for the next fifteen minutes while his people told everyone to get away. Nice.
Of course he didn’t have to pose with anyone – he didn’t owe me or anyone anything – but the whole thing still was super odd. I would have loved to get a picture with RDJ, but I guess that just wasn’t my night. Hopefully someday he’ll be in the mood to take pictures….for now it’ll just have to be chalked up to a Fangirl FAIL. Sad he used to be so nice
Guess he was nicer when he was on dope.
Just strange, and sad. Looks like RDJ has turned into another celeb who sees himself above ‘the little folks’. Maybe next time, Pinky, when he doesn’t have his stupid security entourage around.
I was especially shocked when I read your bit about the security shouting “He’s not taking pictures tonight, and don’t ask!” and then RDJ himself pose for pictures. For a low-key event, surely the security could be nicer about it. And the fact that RDJ just didn’t say anything to you, not even a “No”, was really awful.
It seems like people are just meaner and above themselves in Los Angeles.
