Fanboy Fail Fridays! The Cloud Atlas Premiere Report! Missing Susan Sarandon! Getting Dissed By Tom Hanks! Ignored By Halle Berry! Sigh…
Ah, Cloud Atlas… Now, this is a movie I’ve been curious about for some time. I knew that the premiere would either be an awesome success or a lovely addition in the long line of Fanboy Fails. Seeing as this is indeed Fanboy Fail Friday, I think you can guess as to what happened. Doh!
There was a lot of promise in this premiere I mean Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent and more you would think it would have been at least moderately decent. Well… It never ceases to amaze me how honestly some stars thing that they are too good for their fans.
4:01 p.m. – I just arrived. Billy was the early bird here and saved us some spots. Now, he’s a little sensitive about his spot choice since CB gave him grief earlier in the day. We are a tad to the right of drop offs which honestly can be good and bad. You just never know.
4:12 p.m. – There aren’t that many people here considering. I expected a much larger crowd.
4:34 p.m. – The carpet is pretty basic, nothing that crazy, lol..
4:41. p.m. – I’m trying to convince Billy we need to make signs. You have to do what you have to do!
4:45 p.m. – Billy’s not a bad sign maker, lol…
4:49 p.m. – Aww Batman and the Joker are hanging out. I’m glad to see they’ve patched up their differences.
5:09 p.m. – There is a giant group of Asian tourists, or a school group standing behind us. LOL… God bless them.
5:31 p.m. – The carpet starts at 6:00 so I’m hoping this will start to get going soon. I really want Hugh Grant. I’ve been wanting him to sign a few things forever!
5:34 p.m. – The Other Mike is here. He just said that he has his hands on the pulse of the nation. LOL… So, Billy is checking to make sure that The Other Mike actually has a pulse. LOL… We were talking about the upcoming election. Sigh, I just wish it was over. Man oh man.
6:01 p.m. – It looks like this are starting to happen. Well, not happen but the press and publicists are getting into position.
6:03 p.m. – Scotty finally arrived.
6:09 p.m. – First arrivals…. It’s Andy Wachowski! Everyone is calling him over. He’s hesitating but people are persisting. Tom Tykwer and Lana Wachowski have also arrived.
6:12 p.m. – After some camel prodding all three come over.
First in our section is Run Lola Run director Tom Tykwer!
I’m actually really excited to meet Tom Tykwer. I loved Run Lola Run and have a mini poster for him. Tom was really excited to see it and was like, “Now that one is for me!”
Tom Tykwer also signed my Cloud Atlas mini poster as well.
Then Lana Wachowski runs over. She is adorable and sweet. I swear she is trying to get as many people as possible.
She signs my Cloud Atlas mini poster.
We try to get Andy but he apologizes as he gets taken across the street! Doh!
6:14 p.m. – There’s Jim Broadbent!
We yell for him and he comes right on over to us.
He signs my Cloud Atlas mini poster, and I told him how much I loved him in Moulin Rouge! Because It’s one of my all time favorites! He said, “thank you so much!”
6:17 p.m. – Scotty is kicking himself for not bringing his Harry Potter poster for him. Doh…
6:22 p.m. – Keanu Reeves is here. Everyone is calling for him. I think it’s nice he came to support the Wachowski’s!
6:31 p.m. – Susan Sarandon has just pulled up. We yell for her, we wave our sign and a truck pulled up right in front of Billy and I!!! It’s preventing Susan from coming over to us. So instead she starts three people down from us and we miss her. Son of a whore!
Dammit! I’m so mad… And Susan signs and signs down the line. Sigh… I’m having the worst luck with her lately.
I missed her at Jeff who lives at home and I miss her at Cloud Atlas… Grumble.
6:42 p.m. – Jim Sturgess has arrived and is coming over.
I hate his mustache. Just saying. Jim is super nice though, and I mean super nice.
He signs and signs. I got him on my Cloud Atlas poster.
6:46 p.m. – There’s Tom Hanks.
He waves and we yell, and yell, and yell, and yell… Finally he turns around and takes video of us and pretends he texting everyone. It seemed so douchey.
Like really dude, your last movie involved a motor scooter and you can’t sign a few autographs. And then to act like a high and mighty jackass… Really Tom Hanks? Really?
6:58 p.m. – There’s Halle Berry!
We all yell and scream, she turns, waves and walks away and waits to get on the carpet.
Total diss. Damn… I thought she would do a few autographs at least. Really? My Lord what is wrong with these guys!
And Hugh Grant was a no show. I swear, this was a washout. Cool about the few people I got, but really? Tom Hanks is supposed to be this “nice guy” an then acts like an ass dissing all the people waiting. I mean, I hate saying negative things about someone but he’s like this all the time and people think he’s a swell guy. Well, let me clue everyone in, Tom Hanks is an ass!
Fanboy Fail! Grumble…

Mike, I totally disagree that you consider this premiere a FanBoy Fail. To me, a fail is an event/premiere that you don’t get anybody or a lesser name. Look who did sign. The director/producers, Jim Broadbent(who’s rare), Jim Sturgess, and Susan Sarandon. I consider that pretty decent. Yeah, you didn’t get Sarandon, but you were just in the wrong spot. It happens to all of us. As for Tom and Halle not signing. I actually am not surprised at the stiff. Getting Tom in the past he just doesn’t seem to be a crowd person. Low key, one one one or in a small crowd he is as nice as can be. Just recently at two events, a Shakespere Reading Benefit at UCLA and at an event at the Acme Comedy Club just this past Sunday he signed for fans and posed for photo opps. Tom even bought me a soda when I “warned” him that the vending machine stole my money at the UCLA event! Doesn’t “sound” like an ass to me. As for Berry…she hates the papps with a tee! With the scummy papps behind us can you really blame her? When there are no papps around she signs.
Mike I know it’s discouraging when “A” names like a Hanks or a Berry won’t sign BUT we did get some good people at the premiere. They can’t all be good.
I disagree when the 2 stars of the movie do not sign, it’s a fail in my book… It was nice seeing everyone though.
The only time I see Tom Hanks is when is is running to his car. Literally running even when there are maybe 6 to 9 people behind a barricade, he still runs and ducks. I suppose it’s only fair as I’ve been running and ducking most of his movies lately — but I do want to see Cloud Atlas!
(I really do need Jim Broadbent though — sigh!)
The Other Mike…..
Different times/situations bring different results. Premiere’a are not the best place to get an autograph. Way too many people plus it doesn’t help with the premiere being located at one of the major tourest attractions ( Chinese Theatre ).
AGAIN I feel a fail is when one or no one comes over. Having 6 people come over and sign, including Oscar winner Susan Sarandon and a rare name like Jim Broadbent, it is far from a fail. Where you chose to wait was your choice. I’m sure the next event will be better Mike. Take care!
I think it’s a fail when you have two giant stars and neither one does it. Now, if I went to the premiere for Jim Broadbent specifically, okay cool… like at the No strings attached premiere. I went for Demi Moore and Kevin Kline. Got both, I was super stoked, but let’s not pretend… I wanted Portman too… It wasn’t a “fail” cause I didn’t expect Portman to cross but I did expect Hugh Grant to show and I did expect Halle Berry to sign, Hanks is always a toss up.
And a premiere is the time when a star should sign. Period, that’s a given for me. If they don’t want to sign at a hotel, airport, etc… I get it, but a premiere, that’s when you do it. IMHO…
So, I guess I was lucky as hell that I got Tom the other day… Never realized he was that hard. I’m such a newbie!
Hi Mike: I’ve been reading your blog for a few months and I’ve seen you at some premieres but I’ve never said hello. I understand your point about not getting two of the biggest stars of the film. But at least you got something! Funny thing, I actually have a very awesome encounter with Tom Hanks. Sure I got him with a full belly and as we say in Mexico “Barriga llena, corazón contento” lol. He was having dinner behind me with Rita, Ian Gomez and Mia Vardalos or whatshernamecannotgoogle, but we finished before him so we waited outside for about 20 minutes, when he finally came out and we asked for a picture he was nice and even started laughing randomly like a clown out of nowhere. So maybe it is about what John says, he’s not a “crowd” person. Not that I’m justifying him, I do think it’s kind of an actor’s duty to sign at least some of the waiting fans, out of decency. Anyway, better luck next time!
Man oh man! So glad I stayed away from this! I was going to go but got sick before I was to leave. Anyone know how Flight premiere turned out? I heard Denzel didn’t sign or achnowlege any of the fans, did Robert Zemeckis show? And did he sign?
