Fanboy Fail Fridays! Pinky Recounts Her Numerous Missed Attempts At Meeting Steve Carell! Little Miss Sunshine Sadness!

I placed a panic’d email last night. Guys, I need a Fanboy Fail Friday! lol… My mind was complete mush and so many of the Fanboy Family answered my plea.

Hello, my lovelies. Pinky Lovejoy here with a tale of woe. A tale so sad that, well, I might start crying. OK, fine, it’s not that dramatic….Still, it does pull at my heartstrings a little.

I’m sure you’re familiar with comedic actor and humor giant, Steve Carell. When you think about him, you probably visualize him with dark hair, a goofy smile, and a nice looking face. However, when I think about him, all I see is a UNICORN because that is what he’s become to me.

Sigh. It all started years ago at Sundance when Steve was there promoting “Little Miss Sunshine.” At the time, he was pretty much just getting big, so I figured I had a pretty good shot at getting a picture with him.

Keep in mind, though, that this was also when I was just starting to get more and more adept at getting photo opps, so my skills weren’t as honed as they are now (you know what they say….practice, practice, practice….). The night of his premiere came and I saw him in one of the front rows in the biggest theater at the festival. Sadly, as I walked up near him, one of the women he was with shot me a look that came across as, “You better not even think of approaching us right now.” Not wanting to be a nuisance, and knowing I had tickets to his next screening the following morning (in a much smaller venue where it’s usually a lot easier to get pictures), I decided to wait.

Mistake #1.

I now want to kick myself for that decision, especially considering I also stopped myself from asking Abigail Breslin, Robert Redford, and Alan Arkin that same night. MAJOR FAIL.

The next morning I went to the screening bright and early and sat in the front row. Once again, I LOVED the movie and couldn’t wait to see the cast during the Q&A. There they were – ALL of them – five feet from my face. I even asked a question and each one of them replied directly to me. I was dying.

But, I had a decision to make: Do I go for Steve Carell first, or do I go for Greg Kinnear? I’d been wanting a picture with Greg FOREVER and had never had the opportunity. In my deduction of where they were standing (we always have to factor everything, don’t we?), I thought I could do both. I thought I could easily get a quick picture with Greg and then hop over to Steve. Wrong.

Mistake #2!

I got my picture with Greg, but then Steve got mobbed and taken off the stage. Gah! I was kicking myself for days after that. Finally this year at Sundance, Steve returned and I thought I would be sure to get him. I went to his screening and when he left, we called him over to the rail. Happily, he came over. Sadly, he didn’t go to where I was standing, he only went two people down from me – I picked the wrong spot!

Mistake #3!

Then, the worst of all – I went to the Press area the next day knowing Steve would eventually show up to do press for his movie. I’d seen a tip sheet that said he’d be there around 1:30 and it was only like 11:30 at the time. While we were killing time before Steve arrived, we heard Shia LeBeof was leaving and were waiting for him. This ended up taking SO long that I missed Steve.

Not only was he early, but he didn’t stay until 1:30, which is when I figured I’d see him for sure. So, in conclusion, I was, once again, in the exact same place as Steve, at the exact same time, but, still, missed him. Other people got pictures. Just not me.

Mistake #4.

While Steve has several movies coming out, I’m hoping upon hope that somehow he stops being my unicorn…but I don’t want to get my hopes up. Maybe someday the stars will align and I’ll finally get my chance. Until then, I’ll just continue to beat myself up for not making the right decisions in the past. Curses!
