Glee Season 4 Blu-Ray Review! The Kids Of WMHS Are All Grown Up! How Does The New Cast Stack Up?

Glee is an interesting show, you either love it or hate it. There really isn’t any middle ground. To be honest, I tuned out around the end of season 2 even though I did tune in here and there in season 3.

In season 4, now out on blu-ray, the show is going through a huge transition. The main cast and seniors from last season have graduated and some have even moved to different states.

It’s always hard for shows set in high school to thrive outside the confines of the academic establishment. Some of the best shows have struggled in the same way, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Veronica Mars, Beverly Hills 90210, just to name a few. Glee has a hard time in the very same way, but eventually finds its footing.

Rachel Berry is in New York for college and battling her new dance instructor played by Kate Hudson and Finn is having a hard time finding himself after getting kicked out of the military. Kurt makes his way to New York and moves in with Rachel and their bromance is solidified. Eventually Santana makes her way to the city that never sleeps and the threesome make the most fun combination ever (spinoff… Just saying).

Back at WMHS some new students have joined the Glee club including Marley the new student this season. She clearly is taking up the Berry mantle but she’s so much more relatable. Also Unique and Sam are given a lot of time to shine this season and the combination of the new characters with the remaining older students actually works really well.

As Marley, Melissa Benoist shines in the crowded cast. She infuses Marley with girl next door charm but also having an inner strength which suits her so well. In fact, she reminds me of a younger Rachel Nichols, who I think is extremely underrated as an actress.

The nice thing about season 4 is that a lot of what the writers have done is let the characters live. By that I mean, seemingly they have gotten away from the Heroes-itis that plagued the last season, i.e. making their characters do stupid things they would never do, for the sake of advancing the plot. In fact, this whole season feels lighter and lot more relaxed than the past. It gives the characters a lot of room to breathe and actually be people rather than cardboard characters.

It’s also nice to see everyone at WMHS grow up a little, with college comes a whole new set of trials an life lessons. After seeing this season, I’m actually really interested to see where they go next. The New York set scenes add so much resonance to the series. I didn’t think that it would ever find the right balance and it’s to the shows credit that they are so effective. The combination of Kurt, Rachel and Santana works so well, each character can be a bit much on their own, but these three together have a great chemistry. I’m shocked honestly, about how much I love them.

Season 4 of Glee sparkles on blu-ray. I can’t go on about how much I love the medium and it suits the show very well, it’s flashy and the colors really pop. Special features include the Glee musical jukebox, Building New York, Glee on Film, and more. Each are good and are nice additions to the set.

Overall, if you’ve given up on Glee like a lot of people have, check out season four. It may have taken a few episodes but this season Glee has really found it’s groove.

Glee Season 4 is available now on blu-ray and DVD!
