When it comes to film franchises, there are few as notable and are such box office heavyweights like The Bourne Franchise. The gritty action adventure series, has spawned several films including a spin off series starring Jeremy Renner. Now, Bourne is back and this new installment sees Oscar Winner Alicia Vikander joining in the Bourne hunt.
Jason Bourne, out now on DVD and Blu-ray, amps up the action right away. Director Paul Greengrass once again returns behind the camera for the latest outing with Matt Damon in the lead as Jason Bourne. Now with a fully recovered memory, Jason Bourne is in hiding. It’s only when he’s contacted by Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) has done some hacking into the CIA database and pulled down a bunch of info including some newly discovered background on Jason Bourne. His father groomed Jason to be the super spy that he is.
Nicky brings Jason the info which of course puts a target on both of their backs. After a chase scene and a shootout, thanks to CIA’s Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones) and Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander), Nicky is down for the count and now Jason has to surface to learn more about his father and what left him in the situation he’s in now.
Heather feels like she can bring Jason Bourne in alive and bring him back to the fold, while Robert Dewey just wants Jason dead. It’s a cat and mouse game and even though the plot this time around doesn’t have the gravitas of the previous films, it’s enough to carry the film through to the end. It would have been nice if there was more fleshing out of the intentions especially of the major players involved but having Matt Damon put on Jason Bourne’s shoes on for another ride is a real thrill.
Matt Damon knows this character inside and out at this point and it really shows here. He lives and breathes Jason Bourne. Plus, Damon has gotten is superb fighting shape for the role, he’s a rough and tough menace and the fact that he’s aged in the time since the last film actually helps him this time around. The age actually helps him and lends the years and the history of the previous films squarely in front of the viewer.
I know a lot of people complained about some sameness settling in during the franchise and while I can see that, I also think that it doesn’t take anything away from a solid action film. This is a newer Jason Bourne and I’m interested to see where this newer version of a classic character goes in additional chapters.
Jason Bourne arrives on Blu-ray and 4K in an amazing transfer. For the first time, I was able to see a film in the new 4K format and I was blown away. The film is shaky by design bounces around a lot. With the new 4K transfer there’s zero loss, where even on blu-ray there would have been some in such an action heavy film. The details are extraordinary, you can see the smallest detail right down to the pores and follicles on the actors. It’s very interesting to see a film this way. Quite stunning.

Bringing Back Bourne – This is a nice featurette that details the quest to bring the original Jason Bourne back to the screen. Even talking about the fans demand for the character and brining back Paul Greengrass as well.
Bourne to Fight – This featurette has three parts
Bare-Knuckle Boxing – This is a look at the tip top shape Matt Damon had to get in for his character in the movie.
Close Quarters – This is a look at the films locations.
Underground Rumble – This is a look at the final sequence and the drama surrounding it.
The Athens Escape – A look at the chase sequence.
Las Vegas Showdown – This is a two part feature that focuses on the Las Vegas portion in the film.
Convention Chaos – This is one of the biggest sequences in the film, and this is an inside look.
Shutting Down the Strip – This is a quick look at how the producers shot the Las Vegas strip sequence and how they shut it down.
Overall, I think that this Jason Bourne is a worthy addition to the film saga. It’s a solid action adventure film that really showcases Matt Damon’s knowledge of the character and the film saga. I think it’ll be a great addition under the tree or as a stocking stuffer.
