Lucifer: The Complete First Season DVD Review!

Warner Bros Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy for the DVD I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own.

I always love high concept series, and this past season there was one standout. Based on the Vertigo Comics characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenbrg, Lucifer took off in the ratings once it followed The X-Files reboot this past fall. Since then, the series has become somewhat of an underground sleeper hit, and has developed a loyal fanbase.

Lucifer: The Complete First Season arrives on DVD August 23 and the series is perfect for binge-worthy viewing. The Lord of the underworld, Lucifer (Tom Ellis) is bored in hell and has emerged deep in the heart of Los Angeles. He runs a club and treats people as his mischievous playthings. When one of the women, who he has helped become a pop star, returns to the club but then gets brutally murdered right in front of him, something happens to Lucifer. Something stirs deep within his soul and he starts to think that he’s capable of having feelings for an actual human being.

Of course this is a revolting thought to Lucifer, how could this have happened? He confides in his friend and fellow demon in disguise as a beautiful young women Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt). In the meantime, the LAPD is on the high profile case. Assigned to the case is Chloe Decker (Lauren German), a homicide detective and former actress. Chloe is drawn to Lucifer and his abilities but she is turned off by his personality at the same time. He is Lucifer after all, clearly he’s going to have a bit of an edge.

Chloe and Lucifer form an unlikely partnership and Lucifer basically forces himself onto the case. They start to work together and Lucifer starts to become drawn to Chloe’s inner goodness and her search to always do what’s right. Together they find out who killed the songstress and continue to work together.

Then there’s Amenadiel (DB Woodside) who is determined to bring Lucifer back to the hell. Did I mention that Amenadiel is also Lucifer’s brother? Lucifer has other plans and the two are at odds. However, the two brothers are forced to work together sometimes, which is something neither brother enjoys very much.

The series itself is imminently watchable and really grows throughout the thirteen episode series run. Tom Ellis is excellent as the dark prince with the heart of gold. He brings a sense of fun and whimsey to the role. The thing about Lucifer that’s hard to pull off is that, one, he’s the devil and we really don’t want to root for him, and two, he has to be a likable cad. Tom Ellis really pulls it off and especially in the scenes with Lauren German as Chloe, you can see he’s developing a love for humanity.

Lucifer: The Complete First Season arrives on DVD in a good transfer thanks to Warner Bros Home Video. The set I received to review is a DVD and not high definition blu-ray so the picture quality clearly wouldn’t be as crisp or clear. However, even on DVD it’s still better quality than the broadcast version. The color palate is good with the blacks very deep with little grain. Los Angeles pops in the brighter scenes and the fine details are crisp throughout.

Special features available on the set include:

Lucifer: 2015 Comic-Con Panel – I love that Warner Bros includes the panels from comic con on each of the DVD sets. It’s worth a spin, and better than camping out 24 hours in advance to see it.

There are Character Profile Featurettes for several characters including Amenadiel, Linda, Chloe Decker and Dan.

There are deleted scenes for select episodes as well as a gag reel (which I always like to watch).

There is also a featurette called Devilish Duo and Lucifer Morningstar, which is a look at the main character.

Overall, I think if you give Lucifer a chance, I think you’ll really enjoy this series. It’s one of those shows, for me at least, that got lost in the fray of new series, but I’m so glad I got to rediscover it on DVD. It’s a fun and quirky show, that I think it going to really catch on!
