Like previous years, New York Comic Con was a sold-out weekend of fun!

I’ve recounted many of the fabulous cosplay and swag adventures (good and bad!) and still have lots of news from the many new shows that are coming out, but I also have some stories to share from the exhibit floor as well!

You can’t say “New York” and “comics” and not think of Marvel. Try it. You can’t! And true to form, Marvel came out to play with Lola…

…and generalissimo, Stan Lee.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. also represented with Agents Fitz (Iain de Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and showrunner Jeph Loeb. They did interviews in front of Lola (even they were not allowed in Lola – Agent Coulson isn’t joking about that!) and then they met fans with a signing.

SHIELD

Life is probably different now that the show is on air, but the cast is as friendly as ever. Since the Agents of SHIELD signing in San Diego, Elizabeth seems to have found her last name while Ian’s turned into initials. Iain and I talked about his Scottish accent as I love it, but he’s worried that people can’t understand him. With Outlander coming out, that Scot lilt is going to be verra popular!

Elizabeth is super sweet and we talk about craving British foods – her more than me, though I do love the wacky potato chip flavors they tend to have over there.

The Nerd Machine was making their first New York appearance — founder Zachary Levi is in town and getting rave reviews for his work in the Broadway musical First Date. Even though Zach had 5 performances during the 4 days of NYCC, he still found time to come to the Nerd Machine booth and help raise funds for Operation Smile. Operation Smile changes the lives of children born with cleft lip or other deformities. Yeah, this is a worthy cause.

Like San Diego, Zach pulled in friends and guests of the con to time out to sign autographs or take pictures for $20. Can you top that?

Among the guests this weekend, Zach (of course!) and Doctor Who’s Arthur Darvill (who’s also coming to Broadway)…

…The cast of Haven (I can hear Anushika shrieking from here!)…

…as well as David Duchovny, the cast of The League, Tyler Labine, Greg Grunberg, Yvette Brown, Seth Green and many others. I think the weekend was a success and I hope to see Nerd Machine back in NY next year!!!

There’s always a huge publishing presence for NYCC and this year we saw the fabulous booth and signing for Outlander.

It was also a big year for tie-ins with Ender’s Game promoting new covers for the book and the upcoming film which has officially been approved as a good adaption by my sister – it’s her favorite book so it’s exciting to hear that the 23 year journey to the screen has been worth it!

Divergent also had a presence since the final book in the series, Allegiant is just out and the movie adaption (filmed in Chicago!) is due in March. More about Divergent coming up in another post! (Yes, sometimes I’m just a big tease…)

Like other cons, electronics tend to drain pretty quickly (and internet was as at a crawl), but you could always charge at Nerd Machine or with pirates and geniuses. Starz set up several charging stations in honor of Black Sails and DaVinci’s Demons. Also, if you tweeted or posted something about the shows, you could also take home some cool swag. Since we like to share, stay tuned for more details on how to take home some stuff yourself!

NYCC tried a few changes this year that seemed to alleviate some issues – for instance, everyone needs to tap their badges to get in and out to keep track of how many bodies are in the building. It was easy and quick so it didn’t hold things up – though it was odd to be classified as valid/invalid like in Gattaca. Hmmm…so Jude Law is allowed in the building, but not Ethan Hawke.

The other change was for the limited signings. While many casts are willing to meet with fans for a signing, there are few studio booths and no DC booth at NYCC (!?!?). DC normally hosts the WB signings since they own DC. But this year, DC bought some tables in artist alley and brought the Superman suit tour, but had no presence on the exhibit floor. So strange…!

Add to that, when the con hosted some of the signings and gave out tickets on a “first come, first served” basis in previous years, people camped out overnight in 30 degree weather. So to avoid this, NYCC had an online raffle which was good and bad: Good that we avoided camping out in freezing/wet weather. Bad because people tried for all shows — including those they didn’t care about or for days they didn’t have a badge. It was such a waste for those that really wanted those shows…

I got lucky and won The Following and Hercules which was great. However, I had some interviews during Hercules so my sister went through the line and meet the cast and got some love from Kellen Lutz (literally):

No word on why Liam McIntrye wasn’t present…sniff! Love him!

For The Following, it was incredibly rushed and most of the cast was ignoring the fans (exception: Shawn Ashmore who was very friendly). Connie kept on her sunnies, Kevin talked to Kevin (Williamson and Bacon) and you basically walked in front of the table and were handed a poster from the stack at the end. The one they handed me was also missing a cast member. So it was nice to get an (incomplete) signed poster, but this wasn’t a chance to meet the cast. I think they were worried about getting all the ticket holders through the line so it was fast… Sigh!

Oh yeah – in a “only in NY” sort of moment, we passed by Electro on the way to the con. Or rather, we saw Jamie Fox filming Annie — he’ll be Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 next year. I snapped a quick photo from the cab as we passed by so you can just make him out as he talks to Quvenzhane Wallis as Annie. And you can see Sandy. Good ol’ Sandy!

All in all, I had a ton of fun at the con and still have more reports coming up for DaVinci’s Demons and Mob City! Whew!
