There are very few celebrities that can make a huge impact in someone’s life. Usually, when you watch a movie or television show, you have an opinion but it’s not earth shattering…. Personally, I think that musicians are those rare artists that affect people on a deep emotional level, way more than an actor ever could.
For me, one such artist is Ms. Annie Lennox. I’m sure everyone has probably heard of Annie Lennox before but I encourage you to pick up a couple CD’s and really take a good listen. Her voice is stunning, I mean it’s raw, soulful and full of emotion. It can touch you.
I had the opportunity to meet Ms. Annie Lennox twice now, the first time she was doing a rare talk show appearance to promote her album Songs Of Mass Destruction. Which again is stunning. I was really nervous honestly, because Annie Lennox is someone I truly admire and if it was a bad experience it would have been very difficult for me to listen to her music again. That’s one of the pitfalls of this hobby I suppose and the old adage, “Never try to meet your idols.”
Scotty, my other friend Scott, two random people and myself were the only ones waiting. One of Annie’s people came out and talked to security. She made sure that we didn’t have 8×10’s and were not going to try to flip photos on her. We were then told Annie was going to come over but she didn’t want to take individual pictures cause she didn’t have a lot of time, and that she had an interview to do so it might be a wait.
It was very chilly out but I wasn’t going anywhere! I had my Bare promo tour poster which was Annie’s first ever solo tour ever in the U.S. at least. My friend Scott had a Eurythmics picture disc to get signed for me, and Scotty had an LP. I had to get the poster signed in a blue paint pen, cause… well… you all know me by now. lol…
After a few minutes, security got word that Annie Lennox was going to come out to meet us now, and then go to her interview. Annie knew it was cold out and didn’t want us to have to wait in the cold just for her. I was floored. I have never seen or heard of a celebrity put an appearance on hold so that five fans didn’t have to wait in the cold.
Sure enough two minutes later out Annie came out… Everyone made me go first and of course I was about to lose consciousness… lol… I had my poster and Annie really wanted to pick her spot. She even got down on the ground to sign it in what she called, “The Perfect Place.” lol… I don’t think I said much but I know how truly sweet she was. Smiling and just so genuine.
Scott had Annie sign my picture disc and she said, “There are a lot of Mike’s here today” and Scott said, “No, just one really huge fan named Mike.”
To which Annie Laughed… Scotty had Annie sign his LP and we all thanked Annie for her time. She turned and blew us a kiss.
It’s so rare when someone of Annie Lennox’s status is nice but to go above and beyond for her fans is what really made me fall in love with her all over again. She doesn’t just go through the motions but actually practices what she preaches! If you haven’t checked out Annie’s website please do, it’s a great place to explore and learn more about this amazing musician!
