Scream Queens: The Complete First Season DVD Review!

When it comes to television, there is one man who knows what he’s doing… That man is Ryan Murphy. If you’ve been living under a rock, Ryan Murphy is the man behind Glee and American Horror Story. It’s an interesting contrast, the sugar pop of Glee and the downright macabre thrills of Horror Story. It’s no shock then that Ryan Murphy has taken both of his worlds and blended them together for one insane crazy series.

Scream Queens: The Complete First Season is out now on DVD and if you’re a fan of horror mixed with does of over the top comedy you are in for a treat. Wallace University is a typical college, you have the fraternity boys, the sorority girls and those who attempt to defy conventions. It also has its own killer in the form of the Red Devil. This Red Devil has his eye set on Kappa Kappa Tau and the “Chanels.”

Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts) is the sorority queen who rules the roost of Wallace University, her minions Chanel Number Five (Abigail Breslin) and Chanel #3 (Billie Lourd) help her keep the sorority in line. The college of course has a Dean, Cathy Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis) who may or may not have birthed said killer.

There are so many twists and turns in Scream Queens it would be impossible to go into them all. Sufficeth to say, that there are numerous deaths, kills and bloody body parts littered around. It’s hard to describe the series is just a few words, Scream Queens is like a cotton candy infused bloody delicious nightmare. I think for season one, the series found the perfect balance of absurd plotlines and clever comedy. It’s so rare for a series to get that right, let alone infuse comedy and horror. The cinematic world is littered with films that failed to get it right and it’s great to see this series really nail it.

The performances are also stellar. Emma Roberts takes charge as Chanel Oberlin the clueless leader of Kappa Kappa Tau. She is the over the top diva who everyone hates and yet wants to be friends with. Think of her like Regina George meets Carrie White. Another stand out is Glen Powell as Chad Radwell. Powell takes Chad, a loutish cad and makes him likeable and fun. He’s hysterical and really adds so much to the series. I would say he’s definitely the MVP!

I know a lot of people I talked to didn’t understand the tone of Scream Queens, but personally I think right out of the gate the series knocked it out of the park. The series was so well written and acted. It had awesome cameos from Nick Jonas, Ariana Grande and in the tradition of Mars Attacks, it wasn’t afraid to kill off it’s stars… On the contrary it reveled in creating a fun character than offing them at a moments notice. That is totally awesome.

Scream Queens: The Complete First Season arrives on DVD thanks to the folks at FOX Home Video. I reviewed a DVD copy of the film, but I will say it’s still leaps and bounds better in terms of picture quality than the broadcast version. The colors are crisp and sharp. There is some loss in the darker scenes but nothing that the average viewer will notice. I would have loved to see this series get a high definition release but this is a fine alternative.

Overall, I have to say, Scream Queens was one of my favorite shows from last season. It’s over the top and hysterical. I’m so glad it got a second season renewal and I think if you give the show a chance you will really like it. Fans of horror and over the top comedy will appreciate it’s subversive humor and the performances are “killer.” Sorry for the pun, but it had to be done!

This is a perfect gift for the holidays!
