Supernatural Bids farewell at San Diego Comic Con! Suddenly Susan Bids Farewell To The Long Running CW Series!

Supernatural, one of the longest running shows in TV history, had its last ever panel at this year’s SDCC. The cast and their fans got to say goodbye sharing some laughs, thanks, and a lot of tears.

The CW show is entering its fifteenth and final season this fall. To put into perspective how impressive the longevity of Supernatural is, no other similar genre show has matched its long-term success. The X-files eventually hit 11 seasons, Smallville ended at 10, Charmed lasted eight, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer bowed out at season seven.  Supernatural season fourteen ended with a whopper of a cliff hanger, as Dean (Jensen Ackles), Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Castiel (Misha Collins) faced down a horde of hellish creatures.

I was lucky enough to attend the panel and had a pretty decent seat in the coveted Hall H, which holds 7,000 guests. Supernatural moved to Hall H back in 2011 and Sunday quickly became known as Supernatural day. Upon entry we were all given an exclusive mini Chevy Impala, otherwise known as Baby for those who watch the show. If you are a fan of Supernatural on a deep level, then you know you’re part of a giant, global extended family. The cast knows that too and the panel itself felt like a giant family reunion whose farewell was indeed something special.

After a nostalgic video showcasing some iconic moments from each of the past fourteen seasons, moderators Richard Speight Jr and Rob Benedict, who play recurring characters on the show, took the stage. These two often M-cee Supernatural conventions and are quite the comedic duo. They were joined by cast members Ackles, Padalecki, Collins, and Alex Calvert along with show runners Andrew Dabb and Robert Singer and executives producers Brad Buckner and Eugenie Ross-Leming.

“It’s been quite a ride,” Ackles noted, as the cast, moderators and crowd fought back tears. “It’s hard to express what we’re gonna take away from that… After this long on a show, to still truly love what we do, and be proud to hang my hat on that, on the day. That’s what I’m gonna take with us.”

When asked what he would take away, Collins said, “I consider these guys life-long friends, and you guys life-long friends. I could have never have dreamed that with that came this incredible fandom.”

Padalecki added later on, “My friendships won’t go away, and Sam Winchester, for me, won’t go away for me. He’ll be a part of me forever.”

When asked for their final thoughts on this journey, all of the cast members choked back tears. Collins brought it back to the fans, saying, “I hope in the future this fandom continues to function as a family after the show is over. You’ve been a force of good and companionship in the world. You’ve been so supportive of one another, and of us. We love you all very much”.

Ackles responded by saying, “thanks for showing up. Without you, we wouldn’t be here. It’s an amazing thing to see this many faces who appreciate what we do.” When a male fan screamed thank you, Ackles had to take a moment to compose himself, ending with simply, “we love you guys very much, thank you.”

Padalecki concluded by saying, “I’m the luckiest man on the planet. My cup runneth over. Thank you guys very much. I’m going to miss you.”

The panel ended with one fan (chosen randomly from those who had asked a question) winning a replica of the show’s iconic Impala, Baby, right down to the weapons box in the dashboard.

The entire Hall then gave the Supernatural team the farewell they deserved – a standing ovation.

The first episode of Season 15 debuts on October 10, 2019…. awesome, that’s awesome.
