Fanboy Fail! Steve Martin Says, “I’m 70! I’m Done With Signing Autographs!” To Four Fans. “And I’m Not Doing Photos Either!”
Man, there are days when it doesn’t pay to try.
Now… I have heard that Steve Martin was getting nicer to his fans. I know he pretty much signed one thing each after a show and was generally cordial if there was only a small crowd… Now… What I didn’t know… Is that he “just wants to be left alone.”
Yep, crazy. The man behind Three Amigos, Roxanne, The Jerks and other countless comedy classics doesn’t want you to talk to him, look at him or anything for that matter.
It starts like this.
Scotty and I headed out to try and meet the funny man before one of his concerts here in Los Angeles. That was a fail. We missed him going in.
So, we decided to wait after soundcheck to see if he would head to dinner.
Sure enough he was. His guy/handler/man on the street said that he didn’t have time to stop right now. We said okay. There were only six people waiting. So we all lined up and decided to work together.
Steve came out and said, “I can’t, I can’t, I’m done with this, I’m just done. I gotta go.”
It was a bummer to be sure, because with only a small crowd, he could have signed one each in under 10 seconds.
Okay, fine.
So, after deliberating, I said… I’m going to try after.
Now, there were four people waiting. No one but me from earlier in the day, one guy was at the show and had his ticket.
Steve’s guy went inside and told him there were the four of us waiting.
When Steve Martin walked out, we didn’t even really ask, he just looked at us and started yelling.
“I’m not doing it, I am no longer signing autographs. I’m 70 years old, I’m done. I’m done with all of that. You wasted your time.”
Someone asked if they could just get a picture.
Steve said, “I’m not doing that either.” and he jumped in the car.
Wow… He’s 70 years old and he’s just done. Stan Lee is 92 and he’s a machine, and loves his fans. I could count so many people who are over the 70 year mark and are fairly cordial. Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Ed Asner, this is only a few.
I understand how throughout a full day having less than 10 fans waiting for you must be tough. I mean sure you can spend $20,000 flying your dog around with you on tour, and have the ability to pluck your banjo and have people come and see you play… what I’m sure some people think is “music” when you feel like it. I know your better comedy days are behind you, but seriously? Is that a reason to be nasty to so few people?
It’s not like people are camping out at Steve Martin’s doorstep these days. Having 10 fans asking for an autograph at different times no less isn’t a troublesome matter, lets be honest.
And then to declare, I’m never signing an autograph? It felt like, him saying, “I’ve suckered you into buying my DVD’s, LP’s, movies, etc… and now go fuck yourself.
The world is a hard place man, when you have the ability to do what you want and regular average people have helped get you to that place, there’s no reason to treat them poorly or act like you’re above them. Get a grip Steve Martin. Seriously, put down your banjo and get over yourself. It’s no longer 1988.
So guys. Just be warned. If you see a Steve Martin, concert, film, movie etc… This is how the man is. Think about that before you spend your money on going to see him.
Until next time kids…

🙂 Hah!
Well it could have been worse, you could have wasted the graph on a DVD cover. Seeing as they are already outdated. It would have been like getting an 8-track signed and being happy about it.
Right. Hah! You could have wasted your time….with a DVD cover…
That’s really sad. I used to like him… To be honest he hasn’t been funny in 20 years, but before that i liked him.
hah! That comment is coming from a guy that pushes children for an autograph. Expect nothing less.
What a child. Guy has no friends.
Such bitterness? And really “John”? When have I pushed any child out of the way? Please back it up or STFU
I hoOr you’re not referring to me.
He pushed my 10 year old and his son out of the way at the improv
His friend”””
@DVD Dave. U pushed me. I’m a girl and 1 3rd ur size. I would start watching my weight if I were u. Type 2 diabetes is real.
I’m going to say he was just having a rough day. I saw him a couple months ago, asked him for an autograph, and he thanked me for coming to his show, and signed my ticket stub. Very polite, and seemed sincere.
The point isn’t whether Steve Martin signed or not. He’s entitled not to. The fact is he was rude and condescending to the 4 people there. That is unacceptable from anyone, celebrity or not.
It doesnt bother me he didnt sign or how he acted. no one is entitled to anyones autograph but lot of people act like that. i hate the sense of entitlement. drives me crazy. if i ask a celebrity and they say no or are rude i dont care. i can seperate that from their work. also, dvd dave pushes everyone lately and while he tells a smaller guy like john to shut the fuck up he sure doesnt act like that with bigger guys.
That’s weird. He was super nice to the fans at the lifetime achievement thing a few weeks back.
Haha. The dvd guy! Haha! He gets dvd’s signed! Haha! Talk about wasting you time. And pushing women and children out of the way to get them signed no less! Really? and you do it in such a classy manner! 😀
Hey Will I don’t know which John I supposedly pushed, but what happens at every event when a celebrity arrives? All of a sudden EVERYONE is pushing to get in position. If you are trying to say I am the problem you’re full of it. Maybe you’re just used to the free for all you have at the airport.
What’s the real story Bo? When I asked a person to move out of my spaced you jumped right in. I tried being nice to you but you think your pushiness is acceptable because you’re a grown woman? You aren’t entitled to anything but the return of the courtesy you show. P.S. Thanks for your concern about me, so good to see you make time to be on the street instead of at home with your child.
Not true totally fake he was just at huck finn Jubilee With his band took a tone of pictures and sgined autographs for fans a hundred or more
Weistaz: Keep smoking your crack! Must be good stuff if you believe that!
Dvd dave. I don’t give a shit which John you pushed. You are over aggressive pure and simple. And yes you are a problem. I’m letting you know cause that shit won’t work with me. And I love the airport. Don’t have to deal with idiots like you there. Last premiere I was at and you were there EVERYONE talked about how aggressive you were.
considering most in person graphers throw their shit on ebay, i don’t blame him. fucking morons trying to make money off of someone else’s generosity. bottom feeding scum bags
Oh my stars!!!! I’ve loved Steve since I first saw Bringing Down the House when I was little! I have a good feeling this is all made up because nowhere else have I heard that he was this rude!! He signs autographs and interacts with his fans ALL THE TIME! Plus, he is an all-around nice man and he even gives to a couple of charities! In the 90’s he traveled to the Persian Gulf with Victoria Tennant (his first wife) to entertain and interact with the troops during the Gulf War.
I agree with Dave, Steve’s only a human being and he can only do so much to a certain extent considering his being nearly 70 along with his long career. Everyone has a difficult day at one point or another, and it’s stupid for someone like Mike the Fagboy to bash them just for what they’re going through!
Just wait till Mr. Martin serves Fagboy a delicious steaming defamation lawsuit!
Hey PrincessBlondieofCorona, I get it. You’re being all defensive because someone called out a famous guy you admire. It’s one thing to have a substantive criticism, but you’ve lost all credibility when your comment devolved into offensive name-calling. Grow up.
Hey PrincessBlondieofCorona-
Serve away. As I said there were four people there. One I know who can for sure corroborate what happened. As Marie said (awesomely too BTW) I’m open to people who what to defend Steve Martin for whatever reason. But name calling? Really? I would like to think people in Chicago are a little more evolved than that.
If you look at the site, clearly if it was a good encounter I would have written that up. We’re about 88% positive here on MTF.
My apologies for the name calling. My point is, that unusual “rude” behavior is NOT Steve Martin at all! Like what Dave and I said, he was probably just having a difficult and tiresome day. What Mike wrote was equal to calling someone a douchebag or b____ just for being upset that they came to school or work late due to personal circumstances.
PrincessBlondie, you weren’t there, so stop talking out of your butthole. I was there with Mike and Mike’s story about what happened to the four of us waiting for Steve to leave was dead on.
Look anywhere on the Internet and ask collectors about Steve Martin. Almost all of them will tell you they’ve had a bad experience trying to meet Steve. There were several shared posts of Mike’s blog on various forums that I belong to, and the responses were “Yeah, Steve stiffed 7 of us in Indianapolis” or “There’s a pretty good story about when Judd Apatow was growing up and Steve Martin was his idle & still a dick to him about signing”.
Go troll on some other website. I don’t always agree with Mike’s posts about who is “the worst signer”, but in this case, I was there and Mike was 100% correct on what happened and how miserable Steve Martin is to his fans.
Steve Martin is acting MISERABLE to his fans?! Hell, Justin Bieber once SPIT on a crowd of his fans after a concert! One of Iggy Azalea’s recent concerts sold almost no tickets because of her strong hostility towards blacks while pretending to be black! Now those two were acting miserable! I can recall Justin and Iggy and other famous people who acted ten million times worse than Martin!
Good for him.
Seriously, he doesn’t owe the autograph hounds anything. These people feel so entitled. The guy is in-between shows, or trying to go to dinner. Whether there’s 6 people or 106 people he doesn’t have to do shit. Just leave him alone.
And to write off the rest of his career or boycott his future projects because he wouldn’t sign a few autographs is just stupid.
Don’t get me wrong– I like obtaining autographs here or there, but I usually do it at a time when they WANT to sign. Meaning book signings or what not. I don’t stalk them while they’re working or heading to dinner. These people have lives & you have to give that to them.
Thank you, Matt!
Even I wouldn’t sneak up under him at the wrong time for a measly autograph, as big of a Steve Martin fan I am!
You deserve a dozen chocolate cupcakes for telling the honest-to-heaven truth, Matt!
After or before a show is an appropriate time to ask someone. First off, that’s been done forever, since the 1930’s and the history of Broadway and theater productions. Second, to respond in that way to four people is astoundingly horrid. I wouldn’t see his projects either if someone yelled at me before I could even ask. It’s not that he wouldn’t sign, it’s his reprehensible behavior.
Shame on you Steve Martin. Show some respect to your fans and the people how bought a ticket to your show.
Just look at it this way…How many of the fans went to hearthe music? I betting NONE. How many went to see Steve Martin playing the music? I’m betting the whole theater. Nobody really cares if Steve Martin can play the banjo. They just want to see their favorite star in person. I bet Mr. Martin thinks everyone wants to see his musical talent. In my opinoion, i think this is doubtful. Reality check, Steve. I am not in his head, but with this attitude, like he is too busy saving the world to meet four fans….this is how it comes off. Mr. Martin should be a little happy, at least cordial, that fans went down to spend their hard earned money to see his show. He could have just pleasantly said, “No,” The fact that he insulted everyone by saying that they wasted their time was just mean. You are funny Mr. Martin, but you are not above anyone that you can be mean to fans, even if you are having a bad night. If your night is going that bad, cancel the show.
This is very crazy! i don’t know how can he act like this! he never was really funny for me!
This man has a breakneck tour schedule, with often 4-5 shows a week which means he would not have stopped at all for pictures and autographs anyway if he has to rest and get ready for the next show hours later. You added salt to the burn by interrupting him (or attempting) while he was trying to enjoy some time relaxing and have dinner without anyone disturbing him. No decent autographer/fan would get in the way of a person like Steve getting a well deserved break from performing in front of thousands. Do you want a group of people blocking your way into the restaurant begging for autographs when you go to eat right after a show?
Con’d: You made your chance of getting an autograph backfire with your blatant lack of courtesy for Mr. Martin. He just can’t magically pop up from the venue to feed your autographing desires like some genie. Now he is a smart man and can spot out someone being desperate and possibly threatening just to make him sign his name on your poster of him. I think you just played with this intelligence and emotions, something that gets no reward.
Vistiing this and looking at my comments two years later, I have to admit, I didn’t know what was going through my head back then. I’m literally cringing at myself right now
Martin has ALWAYS been an asshole to fans, and has NEVER been funny.
