La La La-La La La… La La-La La La….It’s time for the Smurfs! Those wonderful blue creatures that are four apples high. God bless the Smurfs. I used to be obsessed with them back when I was a kid. I know I know… I had them all over my room.
Sadly, I was a little too sick to attend, however the awesome Karalee was on the scene with her friend Jess.
Check out her full recap below!
They’re blue. They live in mushrooms. They wear Phrygian caps.
Yup, I’m talking Smurfs.
One of my best friends, Jess, was in town to visit me from Denver and as luck would have it, a blue-carpet premiere was being held for “Smurfs 2.” We decided to head over and check it out. I mean, if you come to L.A., you have to have a star sighting, right? A movie premiere means one-stop shopping!
It’s a rare early-morning, weekend premiere. CB is nice enough to save us spots along the barricade. There’s a decent-size crowd, with majority here for Katy Perry, the voice of Smurfette. I’m eager to see (and hopefully get a photo with) Anton Yelchin (“Like Crazy” is one of my favorite films from the last few years) and without a doubt, I’m geeked at the chance to see Britney Spears. She’s scheduled to attend, though it’s not a given, and everyone is confident that even if she appears, she will not cross over and sign. That’s fine, I would just love to see her. I know many think I’m lame, but I’ve loved her since the “Mickey Mouse Club” and will always wish good things for her.
As we wait, we see some cute Smurfed-out Smart cars being prepped to go along the blue carpet.
We also watch as a huge Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade-esque Smurf is being inflated.
It stalls without a head for quite a while and is every bit as disturbing as you would expect a large, looming headless Smurf to be.
Familiar faces start to file in, including Scotty the Music Man and DVD Dave. I introduce them to Jess and we chat, chill and wait. Jess and I walk around a bit and grab some breakfast, before finally settling in at the barricade.
There’s a bit of a commotion to the left of us. They’re handing out free McDonald’s happy meals. There’s fervor for fries. Alas, our area does not get any greasy goodness.
The first star to arrive is Jayma Mays of “Glee.” She’s beyond adorable.
She makes her way over and signs for a good while in one section of the crowd, but sadly doesn’t make her way to our area.
Next to arrive is “Entertainment Tonight” host Nancy “I’m 8 feet tall” O’Dell.
She’s followed by comedian J.B. Smoove, who crosses over and signs for a few of the fans.
There are a few walkers, including “Real Housewives of Orange County” star Tamra Barney and Anna Nicole Smith’s ex Larry Birkhead and daughter Dannielynn.
Oh, there’s Anton Yelchin! The crowd screams for him to come over, but sadly (and surprisingly, as he’s known for being very fan-friendly) he goes right to the blue carpet. Disappointing as he was early to arrive and the move seemed solely driven by his handler.
Speaking of handlers, there’s none bigger than Larry Rudolph, the mega-manager of Britney Spears. I keep a keen eye on him throughout arrivals. He’s the key to spotting Brit Brit.
Here comes an SUV and we sense it’s going to be a big drop. Yup, it’s Neil Patrick Harris. He’s with his partner, David Burtka, and their twins.
I have to say, watching Neil as doting dad was really adorable. To people’s surprise, he crosses over and signs quite a bit.
There’s George Lopez, who opted not to sign. Really?
Oh well, no time to care, here comes an SUV and Larry Rudolph is making his move. Spears is on the scene.
The back door opens and I can see Larry talking to her, clearly instructing her on what she needs to do and where to go. She gets out of the SUV and walks around the back, heading straight for the crowd. To everyone’s amazement, she signs — not a lot, but she does sign. From our vantage point, we couldn’t tell if she was taking photos, but I’m telling myself she did not.
She’s brief at the barricade and then heads straight to the blue carpet. She poses with her two sons, who are so happy and adorable. She then breezes through the press line, stealing Vivica A. Fox’s thunder. The sighting of Britney was a blur but it was still pretty fun to get a glimpse of her.
Only one star left to go: Katy Perry. People have painted signs. They’re wearing paper crowns. Shirts are puffy painted with her name. She has a huge fan following and they are out in full force. Finally, she arrives and she heads straight for the crowd.
She signs and poses for photos, working a good section of the barricade. Though it did appear (I could be wrong) that she was selective what she signed, meaning she didn’t sign for everyone. She’s skipping some and I’m not sure her rhyme or reason.
She makes her way in front of Jess and I and I’m able to get a photo signed for CB (the least I can do for him holding spots for us, and I was able to get my photo opp with her a few days prior to the premiere). She takes a group photo with a trio of teen girls to my left. Once the photo was taken, one of the girls could not stop crying. In fact, she may still be crying.
Katy was friendly, but swift, and again, selective in what she signed. At one point, the crowd is starting to really push forward and she calmly takes a step back and holds up her arms, letting people know to calm down and back up.
Once they did, she continued to sign and pose. My friend and I discussed this after and that slight gesture was incredibly normal and free of pretension. And the fact it didn’t send her running away was kind of surprising.
Katy continues but doesn’t complete the line; more like three-fourths. Once she heads for the blue carpet and press interviews, Jess and I call it a morning.
We had a fun morning of stargazing and she loved seeing some famous faces up close. For me, it was fun to share that experience with one of my best friends and it helped me balance out my appreciation for Katy Perry, who less than 48 hours before had left me with one of the most disappointing celeb encounters I’ve had so far. (I’ll have a separate recap on that for MTF.)
Thanks for letting me share…catch ya on the flip side!
