The Strain: S02E05 “Quick and Painless”
This week opens with Councilwoman Justine Feraldo’s men busting down doors to clear out the city one sucker at a time. Everything was going according to plan until they came across one of Kelly’s minions. They were far from your normal turned creatures. The terrifying little critters looked like the spawn of Deadpool and Black Widow. Eeek! The troops retreated since these spidermonkeys were totally out of control.

Ephraim makes a quick trip to an “Empty Closet” to score new identifications. Being a wanted man and all, he needs to take up a new name and look to have any chance at reaching Washington. Meanwhile, Abraham ventures off into uncharted water in hopes of retrieving the Occido Lumen. Sure he looks like a great grandpa with a wicked walking stick, but Mr.Setrakian could definitely hold his own. Alonso and Abraham come to an agreement where Alonso gets to keep his head and help Abraham to track down the Lumen for a hefty price.

Ephraim is really running low on his patience with Zack. The little guy is still hung up on finding his mom. Who can blame him? Even though Ephraim wants to take Nora and Zack along with him to Washington, Nora takes a stand against it. He claims he needs her to go with him, but she pretty much shoots him down. It’s a solo mission and he just have to suck it up. I guess he isn’t that different from Zach after all.
Everyone is on their own adventures. Not sure if they all trust each other completely just yet. They might be a group living together, but they sure don’t look like a team just yet. Abraham is after the history, Ephraim is after the science and Vasiliy is after physical destruction. Nonetheless, they all seek one result.
It seems like girls aren’t the only ones totally attached to their flowing locks. Dr. Goodweather drains an entire bottle of liquid courage during his transformation. Yup, it’s all gone. Ephraim shaves it all. (That hair never felt right on Corey Stoll. I disliked it from day one. I’m so glad to see it finally gone. Yay! )
Dutch and Nora heads out to get Vasiliy out of jail and witness the overwhelming chaos at the station. People aren’t too happy about their sick ones getting quarantined for three days. Nora offers her help to examine the patients in exchange for Vasiliy’s release. Him and Dutch ends up joining forces with Feraldo’s crew giving them insight on ways to defeat the creatures. They find out about the “Spider Kids”.
There’s more chaos at the train stations. Everyone is trying to get as far away as possible. Ephraim gets lucky and manages to get pass security. It ends up being far from an easy ride to Washington. He is accompanied by more liquid courage.
Justine Feraldo, the badass herself breaks down this week when her nephew fall victim to the plague. She managed to secure an entire city, but still it hit home when she had to put her own nephew down quick and painless. We got to see the more human caring side of her. She is definitely not a power driven maniac who is out for fame and glory.
Abraham gets a surprise visit from Reggie Fitzwilliam. He is ready to join the army. Awesome! Back in the train Ephraim struggles to remain under the radar. All his efforts come to an end when he comes face to face with Dr. Barnes. Their unpleasant encounter ends with Dr. Barnes “premature exit” from the train. Ephraim Goodweather is definitely a man on a mission and he won’t let anyone get in his way.
On the other side of town Eldritch Palmer takes his lovely assistant Coco Marchand to a fancy dinner. He is welcomed with applause by all the other guests. Nauseating indeed! Not too long after a little “Birdy” brings some interesting news and Eldritch is more than intrigued. He is certainly taking advantage of his new found health by dancing the night away while the city burns.
Ephraim survives the train ride and finally arrives in Washington. Let’s hope all of his struggles won’t be in vain.
This week ends with an unknown character. An unidentified plane lands to release a “sick” guest. Well, this guest tore through a metal fence and disappeared into the darkness. We get a quick glimpse of his face before he gets chauffeured off. I think we all know who he might be and why he is here. YES!!! With Vaun all fried up, this might just be his replacement. This is bitter sweetness. I was really hoping for a comeback from Vaun, but I guess this seals his death. Still, I’m happy that the fight will go on and there’s a new sheriff in town. Excited for next week, things will start speeding up again.
Until next week, Happy Hunting!
