TV Heartbeat! UnREAL finale! Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer! Disney Descendents! The Netflix Marvel Plan!

It’s time for UnREAL to wrap up its completely addictive first season! But don’t worry, the show will be back with another season, despite what Bachelor host Chris Harrison may say about the show.  UnREAL is a drama about the behind-the-scenes drama of a reality dating show called “Everlasting.” Chris Harrison has gone on the record calling the show “terrible” which is not the most objective answer since “Everlasting’s” host is not too bright and sleeps with the contestants. One of UnREAL’s producers used to work on the Bachelor so, the show can’t be completely off the mark.  Best new show of the summer!

But there are some new shows popping up! Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp is the prologue to the cult film. The extensive cast includes returning characters played by Elizabeth Banks, Bradley Cooper, Ken Marino, Christopher Meloni, Amy Poehler, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Rudd and new cast members played by Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig and John Slattery.

In camp of another kind, Disney is debuting their latest teen musical, Descendants. In this world, Prince Ben (the son of Belle and Beast) tries to make peace with the rascally exiled kids of Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, The Evil Queen and Jafar by letting them attend high school with the rest of the kingdom. Mayhem ensues in a musical manner, of course! Look for Kirsten Chenoweth (Maleficent), Kathy Najimy (The Evil Queen), Booboo Stewart (the son of Jafar) and Keegan Connor Tracy (Belle) among the many cast members.

Speaking of kids and their parents, The CW has a new comedy launching this week. Significant Mother started off on the digital CW channel, the Seed, and is now making the jump to prime time. This comedy is about Nate (Josh Zuckerman) who finds out that his roommate (Nathaniel Buzolic) is dating his mother (Krista Allen) and his dad (Jonathan Silverman) wants to win her back.

Meanwhile, Amy Poehler is producing Difficult People, a new show for Hulu. The title perfectly applies to the show’s main duo (Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner) in the follow clip:

Sunday: Bachelor in Paradise season debut (ABC)

Tuesday: Playing House season premiere (USA), Stitchers season finale (ABC Family)

Health check

We had nothing but good news last week so, with the law of averages, the news isn’t so cheerful this week.

FX’s Comedians was cancelled so the one season starring Billy Crystal will be the only season. NBC is also canceling Welcome to Sweden which just barely got out of the gate.

Starz’s DaVinci’s Demons is not being renewed so the upcoming season will be its last. It’s a bit odd to be cancelled before the season starts airing.

Davinci's

But but it seems to be a theme this week! The upcoming season of Banshee will be the last even though it won’t start on Cinemax until January. Buffy’s Eliza Dushku joining the cast.

Rizzoli and Isles is coming back for a seventh season, but it’s going to be shorter than previous years. TNT hasn’t announced this season as the last, but a shortened season is never a good sign.

R and I

We also have mixed news for the ratings of some last week’s shows. Wayward Pines finished its series on a high note while I Am Cait pulled in huge audiences.

On the flip side, Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! wasn’t quite the storm Syfy hoped for. The show’s ratings dropped by a third so Syfy will have to hope that people really care about Tara Reid’s fate. Viewers will get to decide if she lives or dies for the fourth movie by tweeting their vote. Um yeah. Is it too obvious to say “jumped the shark?”

Crystal Ball

While Netflix has yet to announce an exact air date for Jessica Jones, the next Marvel series, they have confirmed it will be sometime in the last 3 months of this year. While the character’s co-creator, Brian Michael Bendis, isn’t working on the show (he’s busy on Powers for Sony Playstation), he has finally spoken up and has given the show a glowing endorsement.

Jessica Jones Krysten Ritter

The Netflix grand plan is to have a new Marvel series out every 6 months and then there will be a crossover mini-series called The Defenders which will feature all of the Hell’s Kitchen Heroes. With Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage already cast, we await news on who’s going to play Iron Fist.

Also, Netflix intends on having more Arrested Development, but it needs to work out contracts first.
