Wondercon Roundup! All The Autograph Signings This Year Are Online Lotteries! Is This What We Can Expect From SDCC?
Times, they are a changing…
It looks like CCI is going ahead with their plans to have all the signings at Wondercon online only. Which means San Diego Comic Con is poised to follow suit shortly.
Personally, I know some people who would think that this is great, no more lines. But what it really means is, that your chance for a signing is now like finding a proverbial needle in a haystack.
Wondercon may not be a big deal, but when it comes to SDCC… It’s going to be nearly impossible to get anything.
I’ve had a debate today with someone who said, “But now it’s totally fair.” Well… No. I think fair is having the ability for a fighting chance. If all someone wants all weekend is the Wonder Woman signing for instance, then they had a good chance to camp out and get it. Now? Nadda.
If fans are willing to put the time into the signings then they should get a chance to have a crack at it. As it stands for SDCC you’ll be lucky to get Teen Titans Go… on Thursday because you’ll be competing with 150,000 people as opposed to maybe 4,000 people.
Thoughts anyone? Has SDCC jumped the shark?
Lines? We don’t need no stinking lines! WonderCon Anaheim is pleased to announce the debut of the online Exclusives Portal. If you have a WonderCon Anaheim 2018 badge, you may now go online to submit your interest in exclusive signings from Marvel, WBTV, DC Comics, and many more! No need to wait in line onsite to draw a ticket. You’ll know if you’ve been selected to participate in an exclusive signing before your arrival! Visit www.comic-con.org/wca/exclusive-signings for information on how to access the online Exclusives Portal.
The deadline to submit interest in an exclusive signing is 10:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on March 14, 2018. You must purchase or register for your WonderCon Anaheim 2018 badge prior to this date to be eligible. This will be your only chance to participate in the exclusive signings at WonderCon Anaheim 2018. There will be no onsite opportunities to be selected to participate in any of the exclusive signings.
To see if you are eligible to participate, and find the link for the online Exclusives Portal, simply log in to your Comic-Con Member ID account and select the “Exclusives” tab.
If you do not have a Comic-Con Member ID, but have a WonderCon Anaheim 2018 badge, visit www.comic-con.org/wca/exclusive-signings for instructions on how to participate.
Participants will be randomly selected on or around March 19, 2018. After the selection process is complete, a notification will be sent to you via email. At that time, you must log in to the Exclusives Portal and select the “Confirmed” tab. If you were selected to take part in an exclusive signing, bring your printed selection confirmation and a valid photo ID onsite to claim your entrance into the exclusive signing.
Please keep in mind that not all eligible participants will be selected. Adding an exclusive signing to your cart does not guarantee you entry to the signing.
Remember, the deadline to submit interest in an exclusive signing is 10:00 AM PDT on March 14, 2018. Be sure to visit the Exclusives Portal well before the deadline.
Additional exclusive signings may be added before March 14, so be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates!
Thank you and good luck!
Sincerely,
WonderCon Anaheim and Comic-Con
Completely agree with you Mike. From what I have seen on Facebook etc, it seems that most people are happy with this development are the ones who at the moment don’t bother doing the autograph lines because it involves too much time commitment. So for those people, of course they like this idea. That’s like me saying I never try to get a ticket to the funko booth because I don’t bother trying, so that should go to an online lottery and then I would have a chance (although minute). I am willing to spend a lot of my SDCC time in line (and sleeping outside) to compete among a few thousand fans to get an autograph ticket. Now I’m going to be competing against almost every ticket holder, because if it is simple and free to enter and there is no limit on how many signings you can try to get, why wouldn’t you enter absolutely everything? Then other people saying it serves line cutters and people who abuse ADA right because now they can’t ‘cheat the system’. Can we try to solve those problems without screwing over the fans who do the right thing?
Exactly right. The common person who wouldn’t put the time in is like, Woo Hoo! Now I have a slim chance to win something. The people who really care and would put their time into camping out are going to be screwed.
What people don’t get is… What happens to the people who would normally go for a signing? Are they just going to do nothing? No. They’re now going to go to panels, or Hall H, etc… Which will make those rooms even busier and create the same problem, for a different time.
The answer is simple. Do wristbands on midnight the night before that are color coded, let people in according to the color on their wristband. For ADA, do a certain amount for each color coded time.
But to make it all electronic is going to make it impossible to get anything for the people who really want it. The fan who loves True Blood for instance will camp out all night for a fighting chance to meet the cast. If it’s electronic 100,000 people would be like why not? and then even possibly not show up when the signing time comes.

Not to mention the inevitable resale of these – I’m sure there will be some sort of check in with your badge, but people have always found ways around this so it’s an opportunity to make a lot of money for people who aren’t real fans. I wonder if they will allow a trade policy. I imagine if we ‘win’ any items at all it will most likely be for something we don’t really want.
