Written Revelry! The Novel Strumpet Talks About The 50 Shades Of Grey Ick Factor! Fan Fiction! And Teenage Vampire Bondage… Hmmmm

Ohhh, I love this! I have to tell you, I love fandom in general. Anything that makes people passionate about something is just so interesting to me. For this weeks Written Revelry, The Novel Strumpet is tackling the subject of Fan Fiction!

I mean, here you have a group of people who love something so much they want to continue their love and continue the story. I think that’s cool, but where the publisher’s are concerned that could get to be a sticky situation.

And as The Novel Strumpet points out when the subject of your Fan Fiction are teenagers… There gets to be an ick factor involved.

Check out The Novels Strumpets look at Fan Fiction, Twilight, 50 Shades of Grey, etc…. after the jump!

I Finally Realized Why Twilight Fan Fiction is so Creepy to Me:

I’ve written several versions of this. They all go into deep detail about the origins of fan fiction from cave dwellings to Greek vs. Roman mythology to Fifty Shades of Grey vs. Twilight. About how this phenomenon is clear proof of how afraid the internet and rise of digital self-publishing have made the publishing industry. About how this has broken trust with authors, proving publishers are only out to make a buck and don’t care about protecting their writers. About how they are creating a culture of distrust between authors and their fans because: a) Authors can’t trust fans since their fan fiction might be published thus ripping off the very authors they’re supposed to be fans of and b) Fans can’t trust that anything touted as “the next Fifty Shades” isn’t a fan fic or anything published post Fifty Shades in the “erotica” genre isn’t just another rehashing of the Fifty formula.

But none of it felt right. So then I went about rereading the originals vs. the published versions and scouring Twilight to find where they lifted scenes/dialogue and I finally realized what the very serious, very deeply disturbing problem of Fifty Shades and it’s progeny is…

Fan fic is generally written because fans didn’t get a scene they wanted or because they want to try and put characters they love in different situations. And it’s no secret that not just teen girls but adult women (I’d say 30’s and up) were addicted to these books as well. Pointing a finger directly at myself.

Published fan fics of Twilight are generally going with this formula: Super sexy controlling male in late twenties/early thirties + Barely in her twenties to mid twenties female he’s drawn to and can’t stay away from and must control + Erotic sex scenes (BDSM Inspired) = Fifty Shades of Grey, Gabriel’s Inferno, Beautiful Bastard, etc. All written by fans who are probably in their thirties or late twenties for fans the same age and up. All read by women the same age in both the fan fic and published versions and now some are being made into films that will be watched by this group of women (and I suspect some men). So we’ve got authors, readers, publishing houses, movie studios, media, etc. all involved in this realization…

These are all stories written by grown women for grown women who wanted really kinky sex scenes between a nearly 100 year old who is always physically 17 and a just turned 18 year old.

EWWWWWW…

It doesn’t matter that these published versions have upped their age and changed them from vampire and high schooler to powerful CEOs and college students because in the original fan fic versions they still have the name Edward and Bella. Despite the changes we all know the origins and why they were written.

EWWWWWW…

And I read them before I realized the truth! DO YOU KNOW HOW PERVY I FEEL NOW!?!?!

What’s next? Are we going to get published fan fic of Katniss, Peeta and Gale in a true ménage a trois relationship? Are publishers going to snatch up one of the fan fics where Hermione and Snape have a May/December relationship?

Oh, you may think that I’m being ridiculous and maybe overreacting but if these publishing houses see no problem with doing so for these fan fics, what’s to stop them from using others with built in fan bases? Built in fan bases of grown women who want to see erotic sex between barely legal (or in some cases not yet legal) teens.

“But do you know how much fan fic porn there is out there of other equally disturbing things, like children’s tv show characters? Or how many teen/YA books have the characters engaging in sexual scenarios?”

Yes I do, but those fan fics aren’t being published and those books were written for a YA audience, not a bunch of horny women over the age of 25.

Ladies, that’s what the Romance (and a lot of Urban Fantasy) section is for.

I initially read them because I wanted to see just how much they resembled Twilight, how much the authors/publishers could get away with and because I wanted to see how “naughty” they really were. But when I went back and read the original fan fics and the names Edward and Bella popped up….my skin crawled. Now I understand why they were pulled down. Not because they didn’t want people downloading the original, so they wouldn’t buy the published version or because they were trying to hide what they really were. No. They were trying to make us forget why these were written in the first place, because it’s just gross!

Seriously, go pick up your copy (and you know you have one) of Fifty Shades and substitute the names back in (it’s exactly the same as the unpublished fan fic minus changes of punctuation and terms like Elevator instead of Lift)…I’ll wait…

EWWWWWWWW…right?!?!

No matter how old they are in the fan fics, tell me your not picturing the characters from the books or films…Ick, Ick, Ick!

Man and I thought having women my mom’s age squealing for Taylor Lautner’s abs was bad…

*This is meant as a tongue in cheek look at these books (mostly) and the opinions are strictly my own and don’t mean that Mikethefanboy.com finds these books to be a celebration of uber cougar syndrome in anyway shape or form*

But seriously…now that I’ve pointed it out…
