Who Will Get The 2020 Oscar Nominations! We Break Down The Field and Talk About The Odds!

The Golden Globes are next weekend and while the Globes are not the best indication of who will score an Oscar nod, we can look at the other guild nominations to give us an idea on what the odds are on the frontrunners getting a nomination.

For best picture the leading predictions look to be The Irishman, Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, Parasite, Marriage Story, 1917, JoJo Rabbit, Joker and the possibilities of dark horse nominees Little Women, Ford v Ferrari and possibly Bombshell. It looks like the latter might be rewarded more in the acting nominees than best picture. May the odds forever be in their favor!

I wouldn’t count out The Farewell in this category, however. It has the possibility to be one of the dark horse nominees.

On the lead actor front, it looks like a neck and neck race between Joker’s Joaquin Phoenix and Adam Driver. Both are splitting the vote pretty evenly, but I’m giving the edge to Driver. He’s in a huge movie with Star Wars and that might edge him up over Phoenix for this round. The other nominees look to be Leonardo DiCaprio for Once Upon a Time In Hollywood and possibly Antonio Banderas for Pain and Glory.

The final spot should be interesting. It could bed Eddie Murphy, but the SAG Awards snubbed him and I think that will happen again here. Which leaves Christian Bale, who was excellent in Ford v Ferrari, Robert DeNiro and possibly Aaron Egerton for Rocketman. He’s been on the FYC circuit for a while now so it seems logical.

Best actress is an interesting crop of master thespians with Renee Zellweger taking the early lead for Judy and Charlize Theron on her heels with Bombshell. The rest of the category is interesting with a likely nod for Scarlett Johansson, that leaves two slots. Saoirse Ronan could grab one for Little Women, but the film isn’t picking up a lot of love after getting shut out of the SAG Nominations. Still, I think Saoirse will grab a spot, with Cynthia Erivo for Harriet grabbing the final spot. Awkwafina is in the mix too and might be a spoiler, and don’t count out Lupita Nyong’o for Us.

On the supporting front the categories seem to be locked up, with Brad Pitt and Laura Dern seeming the front runners in their categories. Look for nominations for Margot Robbie, Jennifer Lopez, and possibly Nicole Kidman in supporting actress. For Actor, joining Brad Pitt should be Al Pacino, Tom Hanks, Joe Pesci and possibly Jamie Foxx.

We will see soon who is going to be happy campers come January 13, 2020!
