Now, I know I have said this before, but I love meeting directors… Usually, they are super gracious… with the exception of James Cameron… lol… Today, I am going out to try and meet legendary director Mr. John Carpenter. Now, I know a lot of you immediately will go, “Oh Halloween!” Yep, that John Carpenter, but as much as I love Halloween, (remind me to tell you my story about meeting Jaime Lee Curtis and having her write “To Mike Happy Halloween” on my Halloween DVD in orange paint pen) my favorite John Carpenter movie is hands down Big Trouble In Little China. It came out in 1986 when I was but a wee lad on the cold streets of Detroit. Now, it was a box office failure but has become a huge cult hit in the years since. So, I am off to meet Mr. John Carpenter! Wish me luck!
8:30 p.m. – I just arrived… sigh… John Carpenter is doing a rare Q and A with a restored print of Big Trouble In Little China. It was sold out, so I decided to wait for Mr. Carpenter to arrive. I have a Big Trouble In Little China mini poster that I got James Hong to sign at the Kung Foo Panda 2 premiere, and an original premiere screening card I found with Erica the other day…
8:33 p.m. – Plus, I brought my Halloween DVD and a couple other things, but with a low key meeting, I really have a hard time asking for more than two things. Again, I would rather have a moment than 10 things signed.
8:35 p.m. – Besides the fact that I want my Halloween DVD done in orange paint pen and I would want the poster done in silver so… It’s best to wait on that I think.
8:41 p.m. – There are two other guys here. Everyone’s pretty chill so we are just hanging out…
8:45 p.m. – John Carpenter is actually running late… and… Oh my God, there he is… Funny thing is John Carpenter is there sitting in his car but there’s no one to greet him or let him into the parking lot.
8:46 p.m. – One of the guys runs over and pulls the gate open and John pulls in. he talks to us for a second and calls his handler to come tell him where to go. Random! LOL…Oh, there’s the guy running from the theatre…
8:47 p.m. – John pulls up, but the handler keeps giving him strange directions, lol… and… now we’re helping John Carpenter guide his car to the parking lot cause it’s a tight fit. Oh shit! John just hit the pole with his bumper! Doh!
8:49 p.m. – Okay, he is situated, and looks over at us, and says, “Okay come on guys, let’s do this!” Lol… So, we walk up and John just starts signing away… I think we only have two things or so each… John signs my mini poster and my screening card, and then I asked for a photo and he graciously agrees. So kind! It was very low key, very simple and John Carpenter was just the nicest guy.
