Box Office Breakdown! Hunger Games Hits The Top! Big Hero 6 #2! Interstellar #3! And More!

It’s no surprise to anyone that The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 was top dog this weekend. The real upset was how low its numbers were. This piece of the franchise took in $123 million, or $4.2 million per letter in its ridiculously long title. That’s about 22% less than both preceding installments.

Big Hero 6 held onto the number two spot with another $20 million and a domestic total of $135.7million.

Interstellar found a home at number three for a second week with $15 million and a domestic total of $120.9 million. With a budget of $165 million, Nolan better have a lot of global fans waiting to buy tickets.

Dumb and Dumber To dropped to number four with $13.8 million. Looks like the hardcore D&D fans were only able to make opening weekend bright.

Gone Girl held at number five with $2.8 million and an amazing worldwide total of $328 million over eight weeks.

Beyond the Lights was dim at number six with $2.6 million and a domestic total of just $10 million.

St. Vincent dropped a spot to number seven with another $2.3 million. This little movie’s staying power has been a box office miracle.

Fury was anything but at number eight with $1.9 million. The WWII drama has earned a domestic total of just $79 million in six weeks.

Birdman flew up a spot to number nine with $1.8 million and a domestic total of $14.4 million, but is still shy of its modest $18 million budget.

Rounding out the top ten was The Theory of Everything, which is certain to see some Oscar noms, with $1.5 million. After expanding to a much wider release, the indie charmer climbed up from number seventeen last week.

Next week Horrible Bosses 2 will take on Katniss and crew, but look for Hunger Games to pull a second number weekend, albeit, with significantly lower ticket sales. Tune in to see if I’m right.
