Happy New Year comic book fans. I hope you all had a great time and have fully recovered, let me just say I am never drinking again new years day was just rough all the way around. So now that we’re into 2014 and I’ve slowly recovered what are some of the things we’re looking forward to? For me it’s mid-season replacements. Yes this is the time of year when the new fall shows that were cancelled get their replacement shows. Sometimes we get some cool sci-fi/comic book style shows to fill the void. This year we get 3, 1 sure thing and 2 that’ll be lucky to finish their initial order.

The sure thing premiers Friday January 10th on the SyFy channel where they’ll unveils the new Ronald D. Moore series called Helix. For those not familiar with Ron he was the guy that brought us the new Battlestar Galactica series a few years back and since that was one of the best shows of the 2000’s I’ll obviously give this show a serious look. From what I’ve seen in the previews this looks like The Thing” mixed with a little X-Files and a dash of pure terror. Sign me up!

A few days later on January 13th we have another SyFy show premiering, this one is a Canadian import called Bitten. Like the other Canadian imports, “Continuum” and “Lost Girl”, it doesn’t look like much. From what I’ve seen so far the extremely hot  Laura Vandervoot, previously of “V” and “Smallville” is the star of this sexy werewolf drama. What I’m guessing is this is more of a “True Blood” rip off than original storytelling. I’ll watch the first episode but it better be good to keep me coming back for more.

The third Sci-Fi show coming out this year is “The 100” and starts on March 19th. This CW show has everything I love about TV, science fiction and teen angst. The show is developed from a YA book and takes place in a future where a nuclear war forces the people of Earth to live on space stations. Years later as their supplies and equipment begin to fail they send 100 attractive people, it wouldn’t be the CW if they weren’t attractive, to check out the situation on Earth and report back. Sounds like fun but their schedule is a little to full with this type of show so I’m guessing it doesn’t last very long.

None of these shows tie directly into an existing comic, however when a good sci-fi show is created it’s not long before one of the smaller comic companies purchases the rights and develops their own series. These were TV shows transferred to the comic book world, this is not a common practice but it does happen from time to time. Battlestar Galactica, X-Files, Smallville and True Blood comics still get published today. Anymore the stories aren’t direct copies of the show, what they do is take an existing story and explore another aspect of it. Something it’s a story the show didn’t have time to delve into. This can be a huge hit for some of the bigger fans.

Now as for this weeks new books, there weren’t many, however 2 of my favorite books did come out.

new comic books

Terminator and Guardians of the Galaxy. The Terminator book picks up after the last movie and tells the continuing story that the writers of the film weren’t able to finish due to the poor reception the film received. So far the book is really good and a lot of fun. If you’re a fan of the franchise pick up the books but remember these stories will not tie in to the new movie in any way. Next we have the Guardians of the Galaxy. If you’re as excited for the movie as i am then this is the issue to start with if you’ve never read it before. We just finished the Inhumanity storyline so as the team regroups its a good time for potential fans to try it out.

Well that’s it for this week. Next week will be a huge comic week so make sure you save your allowance.
