Meeting Dick Van Dyke! Anushika Meets The Living Legend And “Can Now Die Happy!” Autographs And More!

Oh boy! What a weekend.

I needed a couple days just to recover from all the excitement. I’m sure Mike will recap our insane day at SAG awards. My adventure takes me way back, I mean all the way back to 1964.

What happened in 1964 you may ask? Mary Poppins of course!

Yup, Mary Poppins, the timeless classic that still brings a smile to so many people all over the world. I use to watch it as a kid. If you know me, you know how much I LOVE Julie Andrews, but I’m not here to talk about her today. I wanted to share my unforgettable encounter with none other than the amazing human being Dick Van Dyke who plays the charmingly goofy Bert in Mary Poppins.

I’d be lying if I say I didn’t have a crush on him when I was little. Dick Van Dyke is such an icon and a legend. He seemed pretty much untouchable. I know he has been doing private signings for a while, but it’s just not the same as meeting him. So you could imagine my excitement when I heard that he is appearing in an upcoming Hollywood show for the very first time.

I just couldn’t believe it and was beyond excited. I actually started to get nervous. Becky decided to join me and we both headed out to the show after grabbing some brunch. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by Liz and moments later bumped into the awesome Coogan couple. It’s always so nice to see those friendly familiar faces.

(Editor’s Note: Ummmmmm I think there was at least one other friendly face! Hello! M-)

All of a sudden I heard security clearing up the path and OMG!!!!! It’s him!!!! It’s really him!!!! Dick Van Dyke walked right past us. I think time just froze as well as my entire body. Lol… =D He looked so sharp and handsome. While I was trying to recover, Becky started walking towards the ticket booth. Oh yeah, we need tickets. It was nice having a partner in crime since I was a little disoriented after seeing Dick Van Dyke.

We get our wristbands and head into the show.

It was a huge hall, but the crowds made it look so compact. We spot Erica and Mike. YAY!!! I was so happy to see Erica after so long. We need more visits from Erica. After catching up for a bit, we head our separate ways since we were all here for different celebs.

I was hoping to get a Mary Poppins laserdisc signed, but I ended up getting a Toy Story laserdisc in the mail. Oy vey! While walking around, I spotted an Original 1964 Mary Poppins movie book. SCORE!!! Everything happens for a reason right? =) I was totally stoked.

Becky and I walked towards the Dick Van Dyke booth and got a wristband to secure our spot in line. What happened next, just totally blew my mind away. Dick Van Dyke sang and danced with a Barbershop Quartet. O….M….G…..my jaw dropped and I didn’t blink the entire time. I just wanted to take it all in. He sang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang & Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!!! He still got it in him. It was an absolute delight seeing him have fun and really enjoy himself performing. This day was already worth it. I never thought I’d ever be that lucky. It was such an awesome surprise.

We got in line and I could just feel all the blood rushing to my ears. I know…I blush through my ears! lol Call me weird.

Anyway, I was next in line and as I walked up to Dick Van Dyke, he greeted me with the most perfect smile. Seriously! Such a bright pearly white smile that matched his snowy white hair. Not going to lie. He was simply dreamy! ^_^ (Not a word Mike! =P)

He looked at my book and got all excited, “Ooo….Mary Poppins! I like this!” I told him how much I adore the movie and thanked him. At least I think that’s what I managed to utter. I was way too excited to finally meet him that I can’t even remember everything. I know he said something to make me laugh, I really wish I could remember. Dammit! Lol… I walked away all shaky and dazed. I just couldn’t believe I just met the one and only Dick Van Dyke!!!!! AAAHHHHHHH!!!!!

My inner child was doing cartwheels. Becky was awesome enough to snap a quick shot of me with him. Thanks Becky!!! =D He was a complete sweetheart to every single fan and everyone walked away with a gigantic smile plastered on their faces.

Next up were the pictures. They lined us up and our time kept getting pushed back. So the wait just kept growing and growing. I really hate the professional photographs at these conventions. Since that was the only way to get a photo with Dick Van Dyke, I gave in. I couldn’t miss out on this chance. I wish I was brave enough to show up in a full Mary Poppins outfit, but I settled for an outfit “inspired” by her. 😉

The line started moving and the butterflies kicked in again. I took a peek through the curtains and saw that Dick Van Dyke was sitting down. I thought I’ll probably end up with an awfully awkward photo. Oh well, it is what it is. My excitement grew as I got closer. When it was my turn, I think I literally skipped towards his left side and positioned myself. What happened next left me speechless and I think I laughed out loud like a Hyena! Oh dear! As soon as I skipped on over to his side, Dick Van Dyke turned around with a huge smile and asked, “Is that your good side?” =D I immediately relaxed and started laughing. After I managed to contain my laughter, I managed to squeal out a “Yup!” That totally made my night!!!!! =D I didn’t think it was possible to adore this man even more. I LOVE HIM!!!!!!

The wait for my photo to print almost killed me. It took hours before I managed to get my hands on it. After waiting for an eternity, I finally received my shot. I actually ended up loving the photo. It wasn’t that awkward. I look totally relaxed and Dick Van Dick looked absolutely fantastic. This man still looks way better than me! =D He was so charming and humble. I really hope I’ll get another chance to see him. I can’t thank him enough!!!

His twitter account even retweeted me and I pretty much flipped out. Definitely one of the BEST days EVER!!! If there’s ever a “I could die happy” moment, this was it.
