Fan X Comic Con Seattle! Suddenly Susan Meets Tom Welling! Karl Urban! Meatloaf! and More! Signed Funko Pop Goodness!

A few months ago I attended the Fan X Comic Con convention in Seattle. They had a star studded cast of celebrities. It was difficult to choose who to meet! Once I saw that my unicorn Karl Urban had been scheduled to attend, I jumped on board. Turns out a second unicorn, Meat Loaf was added just a few weeks prior so I was over the moon! I was there for a day and a half, so things moved very quickly and I had a lot of ground to cover.

I headed to Karl Urban’s autograph line first. He was nowhere to be seen and the sign said he’d be back at 1pm. Well, it was 12:45pm so I figured I’d just wait. Well, 1:35pm and still no sign of him. I noticed Meat Loaf’s autograph line was fairly short so I decided to move there and bang that one out quickly and head back to Karl’s line.

Having never meet Mr. Loaf, I didn’t know what to expect. Let me tell you, this man is so kind, so engaging and absolutely loves his fans. I had 6 people in front of me and it took 45 minutes to get through. That should tell you everything. He spent so much time chatting with everyone, it was amazing. Right before my turn he left, but said he’d be right back. Then he came out to the line, which had now grown longer to explain that he had broken a tooth the night before and the dentist was there to check it out, but he, “loved us all,” and would be right back. Then he proceeded to give a hug to everyone around him. I was a fan before but now he’s been moved to the best celebrities ever list.

He returned shortly after and I had him sign this cool, vinyl record art piece I found online. I got a beautiful, personalized signature in gold paint pen. He was worried that my pen wasn’t as good as the one he had, but I told him I had tested this one on vinyl and it looked great. We chatted about how the first time I saw him perform was at my college way back in 19** and what an amazing show it was. He’s so gracious and humble. All celebrity encounters should be like this!

Seeing that Karl had retuned, I got back in his line, which moved at a nice pace. He was chatty, but very generic, but to be fair, he looked really tired. I had a blue paint pen for him to sign his Bones McCoy POP, but he said he wasn’t allowed to sign in blue. I’m still not sure why, but ok. That threw me off a bit and I forgot everything I wanted to say to him. He signed in gold and put LL&P for live long and prosper, which is odd considering that’s not something his character says.

Next up was Tom Welling. I’m not sure if you remember, but my last autograph from Tom did not turn out great. He was super sweet and it was fun meeting him, but there was a pen issue. The recap is here:

So round two has to be better, right? Nope. The blue paint pen I brought literally exploded ink as he was signing (I think it was because I carried on the flight with me). His jaw dropped and he looked at me apologetically and also in disbelief. He quickly made some squiggles and said, “There, an original Tom Welling art piece”. Nice recovery there Tom. Well, at least it makes for a good story. That finished off my autograph day. I had planned to get Jason Momoa, but sadly his schedule changed and he was only going to be there on the last day. Luckily I have his signature already, so it was off to the hotel to get a good night’s sleep for the next day’s photo ops.

The only bone I had to pick on day two, ironically, was with the Karl Urban photo session. The convention had some technical issues with their printers and all hell broke loose. Karl’s session wound up being 90 minutes late! What this meant was that they would not allow poses with Karl – just the same generic, arm around the shoulder card board cut out looking photo. Ugh. Karl is one of the fun celebrities, from what I’ve seen and heard, and will do any pose within reason, so it was so disappointing to be told how I had to pose. I had a friend there the day before and he asked her what pose she wanted to do and it came out super cute. Things happen, I get it, but the paying customers/fans should not be made to suffer due to the conventions mistake.

My Meat Loaf photo was next and it speaks for itself – totally adorable. He uses a cane now, and so he had to be sitting to be comfortable, but still – you can see the love in this photo from both parties.

Next, I had a Superman sandwich with Brandon Routh and Tom Welling. Both are like 6 foot 3 so I look like a hobbit in the photo, but nice smiles all around!

I decided at the last moment to get a photo with Manu Bennett. He’s super hot and super confident to be wearing red jeans – you have to dig that! He was so sweet, I don’t know why he looks annoyed. Someday I’ll master the “bear hug” photo op. I’ve had two and they both out me in a choke hold.

I had a chance to walk the floor before leaving. I especially like checking out the vendor booths. The nice thing about going out of state to a con is the variety of items for sale that you don’t normally see.

All in all a great convention, albeit it quick. I got a lot done in those two days and it was definitely worth the trip! They get a LOT of good celebrities and not just one headliner, so there’s plenty to see and do. I would check out the next FanX convention if you can!
