Futurama Volume 8 Blu-Ray Review! Join The Planet Express On One Final Adventure! Until The Next Resurrection!

Futurama is the show that refuses to die no matter who tries to go after it. Matt Groening’s follow up to the Simpsons had a four year run on Fox before it was sold into syndication. It did so well ratings wise, that there were several direct to DVD features produced and then Comedy Central decided to order new episodes of the series, with this volume 8 being the last of the original episodes.

Whew… Talk about a long journey.

Futurama Volume 8 lands on blu-ray with all of it’s 13 episodes. While I’ve said it before, blu-ray is the perfect medium for animation. There’s nothing like seeing the colors pop like they do in high definition.

If you are one of the few uninitiated, Futurama revolves around pizza delivery boy Fry, who unknowingly becomes frozen for over a thousand years. He starts work at Planet Express, which is a delivery company in the 31st century. There he meets Bender, a sarcastic ad bullish robot and Leela (Katey Sagal) a one eyed mutant who is the captain of the Planet Express spaceship.

The highlights of the 13 episodes include:

Saturday Morning Fun Pit: Where the main characters of the series appear in a crazy skewed version versions of classic television series.

Leela and the Genestalk: Suffering from Squidification, Leela starts looking for a cure for the disease. Fry tries to help and it turns out like a warped version of Jack the Beanstalk.

Game of Tones: The crew of the Planet Express invade Fry’s dreams to try and discover the meaning of an old alien song.

The Inhuman Torch: A lifelong dream of Bender’s is to be a firefighter and finally it’s time for him to achieve his goal. Sadly, as you may have realized, his dreams are not to be and the entire planet may be in jeopardy.

Meanwhile: If you’re a fan of Futurama, you’ve clearly been waiting for Fry and Leela to get married. Now, in what could be the series finale (provided another resurrection isn’t imminent) they finally head to the alter, but with a few minor setbacks.

As I mentioned earlier, blu-ray is the perfect medium for animation and with the release of Futurama Volume 8, it’s clearly no exception. The colors are vivid and pop off the screen. It looks amazing in high definition and honestly, it’s like seeing the series for the first time, if all you’ve seen are the broadcast episodes.

Special features on this release are commentary tracks with the cast and crew on all 13 episodes (which are hilarious and worth checking out), Precious Trimmings: deleted scenes from the final season, Futurama University: which is a collection of featurettes discussing the behind the scenes inter-workings of the series, and finally Inside Futurama: The Writer’s Room of Tomorrow which gives fans a rare inside peak at what happens inside the closed doors of the writer’s room.

Overall, I’m happy to see the series wrap up some of the existing storylines while also leaving room for the show to come back should someone step in once again and save it. The voice cast is top notch, and it’s awesome that they have been able to keep everyone together through all the changes. There are still plenty of laughs to be had with the crew of the Planet Express!

Futurama Volume 8 is available now on Blu-ray!
