I Finally Get To Meet 12 Monkeys and Brazil Director Terry Gilliam! Autographs and More!
I know a lot of people out there only love trying to meet the actors, however I say this time and time again, and it’s the directors who really craft a film. When you have a great director behind the lens it makes so much difference in the final film. It’s their baby honestly. There are some directors I just love, such as David Fincher, Tim Burton, Ridley Scott, Baz Luhrmann, and the subject of this post Mr. Terry Gilliam.
I basically grew up with Time Bandits; it was on constantly I fell in love with the combination of imagery and storytelling. When I was older I was able to appreciate Brazil, The Fisher King and especially 12 Monkeys. Mr. Gilliam was doing a rare appearance and a Q and A at a screening of Brazil and I just had to head down there to check it out!
6:45 p.m. – The screening starts at 7:30 and I just arrived. The line is almost around the corner. If I would have heard this was happening sooner I would have bought a ticket. Ah well… I tend to find out about things last minute… What can you do right?
6:55 p.m. – There are about 5 or six other people here waiting for Terry. I have my 12 Monkeys mini poster and my Time Bandits DVD with me.
7:02 p.m. – It’s a beautiful night and there’s not a lot of “chaos collectors” here… lol… I just thought of that and I like it.
7:08 p.m. – When I told people who I was going out for today, I got a lot of… “Who?” and “Uhhhhhh…” lol… Honestly, Terry Gilliam is a true visionary. He follows his passion his heart and while he may be hit and miss sometimes, he’s always so frakkin interesting. 12 Monkeys is such an amazing movie, Brazil… Is just awesome… And I thought The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was pretty damn good considering Heath Ledger passed away in the middle of shooting it.
7:15 p.m. – You just never know when to arrive at these things. I’m learning earlier is better…
7:22 p.m. – Scotty is out and about tonight as well… I think the whole MTF crew is at something different. Except Pinky who is with her dog… LOL…
7:29 p.m. – It’s so funny, everyone going to the movie is smiling and so excited… I love their energy!
7:35 p.m. – Oh, there he is, the man himself… A few of us wait and Terry is everything you would expect him to be in person, larger than life, full of personality… I mean the coolest guy ever!
Terry signed my 12 Monkeys mini poster and then my Time Bandits DVD… I then had a minute to tell Terry how I grew up with Time Bandits and how much I love it.
Terry said, “How can that be, I haven’t grown up yet!” and then I Pinky – ied out lol… and I know it was sincere but I just was like, “this means so much to me… and… I stopped myself before I made a fool of myself but I still babbled a little lol… Then I was able to get a photo with Terry Gilliam as well!
Overall, it was such an amazing night. It was simple low key and stellar. Terry Gilliam has the best energy. He even was posing for the photographers for the theatre under the marquee!
I’m still stoked! YAY!
Until next time kids…
Congrats! For the record, I was out last night for Kirsten “I hate my fans” Dunst. I should have stayed home with Sammy. 😉 Also, since when is my name used to describe geeking out?! 😉
Honey, your name has always been used to describe freaking out… see Annie Potts, Billy Crystal, et. all… 😉
HEH HEH HEH… on and Kirstin is okay, that’s a hard venue! But I got her there before!
Mike I was there too. He was super friendly throughout the evening and it was great seeing him so down to earth. Glad to see/read you were so successful.
Pinky: I went to the Women’s Short Film Festival earlier this year at the Egyptian and Kirsten Dunst was a surprise guest. She totally bounced after her film was shown because “she received no love.” Even the programmers announced she was there and left early because she “didn’t get the respect she deserved.” Even the American Cinematheque was disappointed she didn’t want to answer fans questions when all the other filmmakers were there.
@Mikey: Grrr….you know, plenty of other people freak out (I’m looking at you, CB, at the event wherein you earned the CB name), so I’m not sure why it’s only being applied to me. 🙂 Maybe because I readily admit it when I geek out?
And I respectfully disagree, Mikey, this was totally Kirsten. The event people didn’t help, but I’ve never seen such a debacle. You would’ve thought she was the President for all the decoys they tried to throw at us (all FOUR of us). Since I met her one-on-one a few years ago and she shot me down flat (where she was promoting a short film she directed, mind you), I didn’t really think she’d be much different now. I know you had a good experience, which is awesome, but I remain committed to my opinion that she hates her fans. Plus, that movie was garbage. I walked out. There’s half an hour of my life I’ll never get back.
@John: Received no love? WTF? She is an odd duck.
I fully admit my freakouts… lol… honestly, without those moments, it wouldn’t be nearly as much fun to go out…. I wasn’t even expecting to babble to Terry, but it started happening… It’s odd when it happens and you don’t expect it!
And I don’t even need to talk about CB’s Freakouts… lol…
In regards to Kristin… Wow… It’s been a LOOOOOOONG time since Bring It On… Plus, I think having Theo there helped! 🙂
