I was so bummed when I saw this weeks Manic Monday! I totally forgot about Julie Browns new musical she was workshopping based on her song, The Homecoming Queen’s Got a Gun! I turned to my friend and I was like… CRAP!
I’m totally going to catch the next run, because I love Julie Brown! Earth Girls Are Easy, Just Say Julie, etc… She’s awesome! Medusa: Dare To Be Truthful… Oh it goes on and on…
Pinky did go and check out her recap below!
Hello, my lovelies. Pinky Lovejoy here back from my honeymoon (which I’ll tell you all about in an upcoming post) and excited to tell you about the fun musical my new husband (I like the sound of that!) and I went to see this weekend.
To say it was a dream come true is an understatement because I’ve wanted to meet the illustrious Julie Brown (of “Just Say Julie” and Earth Girls Are Easy fame) since I first heard her amazing album, “Goddess in Progress” in 1989.
In fact, Mikey and I have had several “Julie Brown Emergencies” over the years, but somehow always seem to miss her wherever she is. Finally, I thought my luck would change when she announced a musical would be performed called “The Homecoming Queen’s Got a Musical,” which originally was set to run in August. After August came and went without a play, I started to get nervous…that is, until the actual show dates were finally announced.
Of course, they were the exact same weekend as our wedding! Luckily, the play was extended to run several weekends which is why we were finally able to see the closing show this weekend. Phew!
Not to be confused with the MTV VJ Downtown Julie Brown, the Julie Brown I love is red-headed, full of energy, and seems to be fueled by sarcasm and parodies. I loved her campy videos growing up and I especially loved the song, “‘Cause I’m a Blonde” which is my “go to” karaoke tune – I even took first place in a karaoke contest by singing it!
To say I wanted to actually BE Julie Brown isn’t far from the truth because I think she is truly incredible. She can do no wrong!
This latest adventure was no exception. I had no idea what to expect for her “Homecoming Queen’s Got a Gun” song to be made into a musical, but we were NOT disappointed. It was filled with fun costumes, a hysterical cast, and great music. Plus, Julie was the star and looked perfect in her ’80s outfit. I loved it all!
After the show she happily came up and took pictures with everyone and sold some merchandise. I was stoked to get a new copy of the “Goddess in Progress” CD (as I’d completely worn out my cassette tape version) and get an autographed picture from her (knowing how much I DON’T normally like to get autographs, this should show you just how stoked I was to meet her – I’m going to frame that for our house!).
Although the short run of the show ended this weekend, they’re planning to bring it back in the Spring. If you get a chance, you should definitely check it out!
