Manic Mondays! Looking Back At That Fateful Trip When The Minnow Was Lost With Dawn Wells! AKA Mary Ann For Gilligan’s Island!!
I have to tell you, one of my first ever celebrities that I met in my entire life, was Dawn Wells, AKA Mary Ann from Gilligan’s Island. This was back when I was in Junior High oh so many years ago. There was a pop culture convention in Dearborn Michigan I went to, and the main names were Dawn, Yvonne Craig (Batigirl) and Mark Leonard (Spock’s father from Star Trek). I know, if you can’t get Spock, get Spock’s father!
Dawn was incredibly sweet and I actually regret not stopping by her booth at the Hollywood Show for a hot second! Ah well…For this weeks Manic Monday, Pinky is talking about her love of Dawn Wells and Gilligan’s Island!
Take it away Pinkster!

Hello, my lovelies. Pinky Lovejoy here completely exhausted from the weekend, yet excited for the people I was able to meet at the most recent Hollywood Show. Of course I was stoked to see my beloved Sam Trammell,
(Editor’s Note: Wait… Pinky’s a fan of Sam Trammell? How come I’ve never heard of this! Tell me more! Tell ME MORE! M-)
but I was also geeked out over meeting Daphne Zuniga from Melrose Place and Dawn Wells from Gilligan’s Island. I’ve been debating all day whether I wanted to feature Daphne or Dawn in this week’s edition of Manic Monday, but overall Dawn Wells won the battle – partly because Mikey loves Daphne so much he might just want to talk about him herself.
Now, I know what you’re thinking – how does Gilligan’s Island fit into Manic Mondays when it’s a sitcom filmed in the ’60s? It’s a valid question. Yet, when you think about it, Gilligan’s Island was always on TV at some point growing up – whether it was in the afternoons, or Saturday mornings, or even Nick at Nite. Who doesn’t know that theme song by heart? “Just sit back down and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip. That started from this tropic port aboard this tiny ship….” I always hoped those castaways would finally get off the island and enjoyed practically all three seasons of episodes at one time or another.
I’m not sure I had a favorite character (as Gilligan is way too obvious), but I did kind of crush on The Professor (hey, he’s the nerd on the show – how could I resist????). I never had a preference between Ginger and Mary Ann, although I did see Ginger in person at Sundance about ten years ago. Unfortunately, she wasn’t looking so great, so I didn’t even take a picture of her let alone with her. Happily, that wasn’t the case with the “real” Mary Ann Summers herself, Dawn Wells, as she still looks great.
And she’s so nice! She complimented my dress and told me how much she loved wearing long dresses. She was so kind to her fans and I loved that she embraced what made her famous and filled her booth with Mary Ann memorabilia. There were some great shirts, I totally should’ve bought one!
Too often these days it seems like people will shy away from characters or projects that were responsible for making them famous to begin with (I won’t name any names, but John Hughes might be involved). It was refreshing to see someone celebrate the character that people love.
