Let me tell you, there are so many shows that have been cancelled too soon, the list is endless… Veronica Mars, Firefly, those are just two of my personal favorites that have thankfully been rescued from Cancellation. But how many shows have left the airwaves leaving dissappointed fans in the wake.

The Lovely Erica, loved a series that aired on ABC called Flashforward. It starred a pretty stellar cast including John Cho, Jack Davenport, Joseph Fiennes, Dominic Monaghan and Courtney B. Vance. Sadly, it only lasted one season and then it was gone from the airwaves with lots of unanswered questions.
While at Wondercon this year Erica got a really rare opportunity… She got to do what so many fanboys and fangirls would like to do… Talk to the creator of a cancelled show and find out what would have happened!

AND… SHE GOT IT ON VIDEO!

Back in 2009, ABC was looking for the next big thing since Lost had ended the year before. There was a huge bet on FlashFoward – a high concept TV series where the whole world blacked out for less than 2 minutes and saw a glimpse of their future. Sounds cool right?

Let’s also add that the show is being run by David Goyer (writer for the Christopher Nolan Batman movies) and Marc Guggenheim (Arrow) and stars Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love, Camelot, American Horror Story), Dominic Monaghan (Lord of the Rings, Lost), Sonya Walger (Lost), Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean, Smash), Courtney B. Vance (The Hunt for Red October), John Cho (Star Trek, Harold and Kumar), Gabrielle Union (Bring it On) and guest appearances by Seth MacFarlane, James Callis (Battlestar Galactica), Gina Torres (Firefly) and Alex Kingston (Doctor Who). Sounds great, right?

Well, flash forward to 2013 and you know that the world is still looking for the “next Lost” so I think you can guess what happened – the show didn’t get a second season despite a terrific pilot and improved story focus. This is one of those TV shows where an extended holiday hiatus can kill the momentum and FlashForward had a tough time finding its audience after the holiday break.

Such a shame since the second half really started to find its voice and figure out the characters and the season ended with a huge set up for the next season. So sad!

At Wondercon, Marc Guggenheim (now the showrunner for Arrow) was a part of the Arrow signing at the DC booth.

When I mentioned that I was a fan of FlashForward and always wondered what the ending was, he launched into a quick flash forward to show me a glimpse of what the future would’ve been.

Holy crap!!

I scrambled to get my camera on to record this rare chance to get closure on what the big FlashForward mystery was all about. Needless to say – SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!

“They were going to leapfrog, leap over, an extinction-level event. They were going to move human consciousness over this event that was going to destroy all of human-kind. So the bad guys really were the good guys. And Mark (Joseph Fiennes) and Lloyd (Jack Davenport) were going to have to work together once the bad guys were killed to try to finalize their last plan. In the final flash forward, before all of this, was going to be black and no one knows anything. No one saw anything because everybody was going to be dead.”

Yes, that was enough to make my head spin. Proof that the writers really did know what was the cause of the blackout and where they wanted to take the story. While we never got to see this unfold, at least I feel a little better with the mystery (partially!) solved.
