Writing contests abound. Seriously they are everywhere, and yours truly has contributed to a few here and there – so I’m always on the lookout for some really cool ones. Recently there are two that have caught my eye and I thought I’d pass them along to you guys too. Aren’t I a generous Strumpet?

The first is Quirk Books “Looking for Love” Fiction Contest. This is the publisher who brought us such gems as “Worst-Case Scenario Handbook”, “The Brick Testament: The Story of Christmas” (you know the story of Jesus told with Legos.), and my personal favorite “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”. Here for your viewing pleasure is my cosplay of that book from a couple of Halloweens ago:

Mwahahahahahaha…..

So I was all excited when I saw they were doing a writing contest. Essentially they want you to write a love story, any kind of love story, and submit your manuscript by October 1, 2013. The fact that it’s Quirk Books makes this a really tempting contest. Of course there are some rules so please make sure you read those before you submit that manuscript you’ve been holding onto about a dolphin and a shark that find love despite being sworn enemies. You know like Romeo and Juliet, only with fins and sharp teeth ;P

But the big one….

The one that made me run in circles with geeky girl delight (no I’m not kidding) is…

THE DARK CRYSTAL AUTHOR QUEST!!!!!!!!!!

Let me repeat that….

DARK CRYSTAL AUTHOR QUEST!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMW, you can write the next “The Dark Crystal” book!!!! This will be a Prequel story set at the time of the Gelfling Gathering and you may submit your stories (between 7,500 and 10,000 words) between October 1st and December 31st, 2013. The winner of this short story contest will then receive a contract to publish a full YA novel with Penguin. Wait! You say you haven’t seen that movie in years? Or maybe you’ve never seen it (to which I say WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!?!?!)? You’re wondering what the heck is the Gelfling Gathering and who are the Gelfling, Mystics, Skeksis, and what is the Dark Crystal, and where is the World of Thra, etc? Well not to fear, there’s a handy “Author Quest: The Gelfling Gathering” handbook that is 18 pages of descriptions and wonderful artwork. You can find all the information here

“Hold up. I hated writing short essay answers on quizzes, how the heck am I supposed to write a novel? Even if I do want to enter these contests or any of the kabillion others I see on the web.” Ok, maybe kabillion is exaggerating a wee bit, but just a wee bit….

Well have no fear, that’s what Camp NaNoWriMo is all about! If you are not familiar with NaNoWriMo, it is the National Novel Writing Month extravaganza held every November by the non-profit Office of Letters and Light. They are branching out to two more times during the year, April and July. The basic premise is that you sit and write a 50,000 word novel in one month. The site is free to use (although donations are most welcome) and you get access to handy tips, tools, and online support to guide you on your way. I did my first one this past November 2012 and I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed it and at the end I had a novel – one that needs many, many, many rewrites – but I did it!!! You can join here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/campnano

The next Camp begins July 1st, 2013.

So there you go, just a little writing yumminess for you guys. Like I said there are tons out there so even if neither of these tickle your fancy… but it’s THE DARK CRYSTAL!… you’re sure to find one out there that will 🙂

On a completely off topic side note can I just say that Comic-Con 2013 is less than a month away? I already feel under prepared and they haven’t even released the schedule yet. Mike’s been posting all the exclusives coming out. I’m literally panicking already and at the same time really anxious for it to be here. I’m already stalking what authors will be there, like: Christine Feehan, Richard Kadrey, Terry Brooks (so I hear) and Neil Gaiman!!! It’s like Christmas!

I’m working on my costume now, which I hope will be ready in time for the Labyrinth of Jareth ball in two weeks (YIKES!) but especially for the Con. Sort of a quasi-Steampunk version of Darth Talon. I don’t have a lot to show you guys, but I did finish my lightsaber walking cane this weekend:
