Erica is a huge fan of the BBC series Orphan Black. I keep hearing all these amazing things about the show and wanted to check out the panel but alas there was just too much happening to get to it.
A huge priority of Erica’s was getting to meet the cast and learn more about the show. And did she accomplish her goal? Yes… Yes she did.
Check out her full report below!
Yep, anyone anywhere around me knows I’m a huge fan of the show and my main goal for San Diego Comic Con was to learn more about the show and to meet the cast. I was hoping to have some news and panel coverage to report, but certain things fell through so I didn’t get my promised slot in the press room (sigh!) and the Powers That Be decided to put the Orphan Black panel in a tiny room. I went several panels ahead of time to secure a space and found out people had been camped out for a few hours already. Sigh! So no chance to learn more about the show. Sadness!
But all is not lost as I did happen to run into this friendly cast a couple of times. Thank God for that!
I was running errands outside the convention center and noticed that the “impossibly handsome” Dylan Bruce was standing behind me. Ah!!
When he finished his conversation, I stop him for a quick picture and he’s as warm and friendly as Paul is steely and reserved. Each person that meets him this weekend remarks on how friendly he is afterwards.
Not long after, I see Dylan coming back again and Elisa starts freaking out as she points out Tatiana Maslany and Jordan Gavaris are about 15 feet behind him. No way!!!
A fellow fan has already stopped Tatiana for a picture and tosses his camera at the nearest person –not realizing that it’s Jordan. Jordan gamely grabs the camera and says “I can take the picture.”
When they finish, I ask Tatiana and Jordan if I can get a picture with them together – a brother/sister combo. They look at each other and smile and say “sure!” Tatiana insists I get in the middle and Elisa moves to take the picture.
I mention that I’m a big fan and had the good fortune to interview Ivan Schneeberg and David Fortier. They get excited and we chat away.
In the middle of chatter, Dylan pops back up and says “Can I join in?” and we all cheer him on to join in the picture (I may have actually jumped up with enthusiasm – I’m not entirely sure.) So he gets in and the first fan gets a picture with the 3 cast members and then Elisa makes sure I do as well (bless her heart!).
At this point, their handlers are anxious to get them back on schedule and they start to pull the cast along. I’m mid-conversation with Jordan as we talk about his twitterchat a few months ago. I mentioned I asked the question about his costume and he takes a moment to think back. Then Jordan’s face lights up as he recalls the question and, as he’s being dragged backwards from me, he calls out “tweet me!”
Yeah! Such a friendly and talented cast!
The next day is the official signing at the BBC America booth. Tatiana, Jordan and Dylan are all scheduled to sign as well as the brains behind the show: John Fawcett and Graeme Manson. Yeah, I’m not going to miss this one!
BBC America typically provides a postcard for its signings and since this signing has 5 people (and crappy silver pens), I lean towards getting the Entertainment Weekly Orphan Black cover signed. They have a couple of girls in hoodies to represent the CloneClub, but they don’t seem to be doing too much.
Graeme and John are first and since people are talking more to the cast, they two showrunners are signing and playing around with the post cards a bit.
Graeme and John sign mine and chat about how well the first season found the show’s voice. (So rare!).
Tatiana talks about what a whirlwind the last couple of days have been and she mock-hides behind Jordan.
Jordan remembers me and introduces himself and shakes my hand. He apologizes for not getting back to me promptly on twitter as he really tries to keep up, but it’s been a couple of crazy days for them.
Jordan is nothing like Felix — other than both of them are very witty. It’s interesting to see how down-to-earth Jordan is, but with that same friendliness and openness that has Alison going to Felix for life advice.
I talk with Jordan and Dylan about their Comic Con experience and if we’ve scared them off. There is an emphatic “NO!!!” from the two of them who are eager to come back again.
Given the amount of folks locked out of the panels and signings, I’d say the fans are eager to have Orphan Black back at San Diego Comic Con next year – just in a bigger room!
Thanks to the cast and crew for being so great! Can’t wait to see what’s in store for next season!
Orphan Black season 1 is available on Blu Ray and a bazillion other formats.
