Paleyfest 2015 Changes! Only The People Who Bought The $1500 Packages Are Allowed Up To The Stage! Say Wha?
So, for those of you heading out to Paleyfest this year, besides the lackluster lineup and the soaring ticket prices, there is one more thing to talk about.
I headed down for the Girls panel today and while we had a nice time, it didn’t come without a fight.
Now, for those of you who have gone year after year and I’ve been going for about 8 years now… Each year has gotten progressively worse. Larger venues, horrible security, etc…
When the festival moved to the gigantic Dolby theater last year, I predicted the worst. However, it honestly wasn’t that bad if you were on the first floor.
Well… This year… Things have changed.
After they final question was announced, Dolby security put up the extendable barriers, aka stantions that cut the aisle in half basically. At each stantion there’s an usher. When I went up from the Parterre to go down to the front, I was told that we were not allowed, because people were leaving.
Mind you, there was more than enough room, since only about 10 people total were trying to go down to the stage, and the people coming up were not moving fast at all. I told the guy, we’ve always been allowed to go down, and he said very rudely, “Not this year.”
Another usher came up and said, “You need to leave.” I was like no. I’m not leaving.
Scotty was in the middle aisle and I was on the far right, so I said, “I’m going to join my friend. She said, “Not down there you’re not.” I walked right past her and down the aisle and joined up with Scotty in the center.
Scotty said, that this security was going to let people down in a minute. Eight people at a time. Mind you, there was only eight people waiting.
So a couple minutes later, we were able to go down to the next level where we got stopped AGAIN!
There was ANOTHER stantion in the middle of the orchestra and she wouldn’t let us pass. We all started throwing a fit and finally were let down. Mind you, it was only one row deep at the stage.
I finally was able to get down, half the cast had already left, but I was able to get Lena Dunham.
First off, I already returned my ticket to American Horror Story and if you bought tickets through Goldstar, I highly recommend if you’re going for autographs or selfies, you get your tickets refunded and avoid the hassle.
You can join the red velvet membership for free and get a Goldstar credit. You get a one month free trial and then all you have to do is cancel it. Seriously, it’s just not worth it. Especially for any moderately big show.
To put this in perspective, only the people who bought the super expensive packages or are in the first five or six rows were allowed to go up after. So, if you’re not in that group, you’re not getting to the stage first, if at all. I think if it had been a bigger show they would have stopped people from going down completely.
As an example, this is about the cut off for the stantion they set up where you had access to the stage…
And this is the full lower level of the Dolby theater.
What’s ridiculous is, besides the power hungry overzealous security is that only the people who pay the $1500 for the “special packages” get access to go up to the stage? Come on, that’s ridiculous. And it will be the same people year after year, show after show.
Billy was even up in the second row and security still told him he had to leave and tried to block him from getting the rest of the cast after he got Alison Williams. What the F.
Since I returned my American Horror Story ticket, I have one more Paley event to go to, I have good seats for that one, that I ended up getting on the secondary market for cheaper than face value.
I’ll let you all know how that goes, but I want to give everyone out there going a heads up. Especially you Outlander fans, because I know a lot of you guys are coming in from all over. Just be prepared.
You may see the Paley Center tweeting out photos of fans at the stage but unless you’re forking over $1500 bucks, you probably won’t make it down there.
Good luck kids…

Paleyfest sucks. They only care about the cash!
Crap, I got an outlander ticket in the back orchestra. now I have to fight to get up there. What a crock!
I am one of those people in the front row (the seats are less than $1300 if you are a Paley Member). You may begrudge us but I’ve been attending since 1999.
It may not look like it from the cheap seats but things are not that great from where we sit either. Many of the perks that come with the high dollar ticket are gone. Security yells at us as much as they yelled at you… More so because we get it nightly. A publicist on stage at Comedy Central told his client to stop signing for the “ebay people” we are fans and have never sold autographs on ebay…and…after all your hassle you got an autograph from Lena Dunham…. I did not… she went to the left of me and never came back… so from where I’m sitting you faired much better at Girls than I did.
For the record, I don’t begrudge anyone for paying for what they want. If paying the higher charges is something that people want to do, go for it.
What I don’t agree with is Paley actively promoting fans being able to “meet the cast” and go up to the stage when it’s only the people in the front who can do so. That’s what I don’t like. That’s what I find unfair.
While personally, I would never pay those prices for the lackluster lineup this year, I can see why people do it however if they love a lot of the shows.
publicist….what do they know. like people could sell it to justify a 1300 ticket anyway. Glad didn’t go down I guess since only one show I actually wanted…
I have been going to Paleyfest for the past 6 years and the rush to the stage after a panel is always a dangerous event. Every year people complain about getting hurt, crushed, trampled, etc. Last year I heard 2 people telling the Paley staff that they would be suing for being hurt during the mad rush to the stage. I knew they would eventually have to figure out a way to stop that rush or risk having someone get hurt badly and subsequently be sued. I do think they went about it the wrong way. First, they should not have moved to the Dolby. They became greedy and thought they could sell out a larger venue. This has not happened and most tickets go up for sale on Goldstar so they can recoup at least some money back. Shows do not sell out anymore because it’s just too big of a theater and the prices have gone up along with the addition of different pricing, packages, etc. The Saban was a perfect size for the event. The shows would sell out and it was small enough where people in the balcony could still see. Secondly, maybe charge an extra fee for autographs and have a table with the cast sitting and signing. People could line up, be guaranteed some autographs without being trampled, and they could keep everything orderly and make a bit more money. The could also limit the amount of autograph tickets being sold so they could keep the time for autographs to a limit. Stop promoting the event as a way to “meet the cast of your favorite show”. That doesn’t always happen and if you raise people’s expectations and then it doesn’t happen then you’ve lied to everyone to sell tickets. My friend was told that this was not part of their promotion and they never say that. I heard the ad on KROQ and part of the selling point was having the ability to meet the cast and get autographs. Paley had to approve the ad for it to be run so they lied. Paleyfest used to be fun, but it was always a mad house and dangerous during autograph time. I’m glad they decided to make it more safe, but they went about it all wrong.
I didn’t pay $1300 for my seat to the AHS panel tonight and bought my ticket 3 weeks after they went on sale. I am in Orchestra Row F. I hope I’m able to get to the stage, but thank you for posting this so that I know not to expect it.
Sorry, I meant to say that my friend told me (after a bad experience at the Arrow and Flash panels) that she was told by staff that they do not say that you can meet the cast or get autographs if you attend.
They did have it on their site this year, but midway through, they took it down.
Plus, having Paley tweet out pics of people getting things signed to me at least feels like they are promoting it.
BTW Teena, I completely agree with everything you said.
I think having the cast sign for a small fee isn’t a bad idea either! Of course they would probably want 2500 per ticket, lol.
