My Favorite! Prince’s Diamonds And Pearls Prop Necklace From The Video! The Story Behind The Iconic Piece!

With all the talk of Prince and his untimely passing, I thought it would be a good time to go back to a column we started a while back and sort of forgot about. My Favorite! Which details collector’s favorite pieces in their collection. Susan did a fun recap of her River Phoenix jacket and today I thought I would talk about one of my Prince pieces.

This is the necklace from the Diamonds and Pearls video.

It’s pretty cool.

So, how did this come about you might ask?

Well, I was working at an estate sale back over… Gosh at least 10 years ago now. And we had a necklace that someone said belonged to Prince. It was there forever and finally I bought it for like forty bucks and I thought I would give it to one of a few friends for a present.

Then, in my travels I met someone who was a costume designer and knew about the necklace. She said it was the necklace from the Diamonds and Pearls video and during the video Prince was supposed to break it, but he loved the necklace so much he didn’t want to do it. Which is why the video was edited with the falling pearls and not the actual necklace breaking.

I thought that was pretty cool.

The prop necklace is actually really big and you can see some of the zirconia stones have since come out of the clasp over the years.

It’s a really cool piece and a random story, only in Los Angeles!

If you have a piece you would like to show off, do a quick recap and send it over! I would love to share more of everyone’s awesome collectables!
