Safe Haven Blu-Ray DVD Movie Review! Can Josh Duhamel And Julianne Hough Find Love With A Sordid Past? Inquiring Minds Want To Know!
Nicholas Sparks has an interesting relationship with film. Some people love his movies and others.. Well, not so much. I admit I don’t have an opinion either way, I liked Dear John and The Notebook but thought The Last Song was missing something.
In the newest film based on his novel of the same name Nicholas Sparks treads familiar territory. Katie (Julianne Hough) is on the run. She was involved in a stabbing and now the police are hot on her tail. She winds up in Southport, North Carolina and meets Alex Wheatley (Josh Duhamel). Alex is raising his two kids since his wife passed way from having cancer.
Since Katie and Alex are two gorgeous human beings they have a mutual attraction to each other… Wait… Someone’s attracted to Josh Duhamel? Say wha? Katie tries to resist the relationship but again, It’s Josh Duhamel! Jo (Colbie Smulders), Katie’s neighbor is on hand to convince Katie to take the leap and go out with Alex… Wait someone had to convince a woman to go out with Josh Duhamel? It must be a movie…
Anyway, Alex and Katie date, they swoon, they fall in love… Awwww… But sadly for Katie a detective (David Lyons) forges an obcession with finding her. And find her he does…
When I watch a film, I really have to judge it based upon it’s intended audience and subject matter. If you are looking for a serious indie film, this would not be for you. Clearly. However, if you want a Nicholas Sparks romance you could do a lot worse than to pick this up. Having the thriller aspect helps break up the romance angle which sets it apart from some of the earlier Nicholas Sparks adaptations, something that I really liked.
Julianne Hough was fine in her role as Katie, I have never thought she was a strong actress but here she does what she needs to do, nothing more, nothing less. Josh Duhamel has slightly more screen presence but again nothing he’s been in has become a silver screen classic But they are both really pretty and honestly if you’re going to watch Safe Haven that’s what you want right? Two pretty people falling in love and running from the cops!
The film sparkles on blu-ray especially when it comes to the visual eye candy of the landscapes. They look stunning and are a nice contrast to the grittier urban settings. Honestly, this really helped me get into the film and I would suggest checking out the blu-ray for this reason.
There are five deleted scenes that don’t add much to the overall theme of the movie but are always nice to see included in this release as well as a making of doc called “Igniting the Romance in Safe Haven.” Featuring interviews with the cast and director Lasse Hallstrom this is strictly EPK type stuff but again is worth watching if you’re a fan of the film. The special feature I liked the best (besides the funny Josh Duhamel’s Lessons in Crabbing) was the set tour. Narrated by Nicholas Sparks, this special feature takes us around the town of Southport.
Overall, you get pretty much what you would expect out of Safe Haven and honestly, that’s not a bad thing. The whole purpose of film is to escape and this film most definitely lets you do that.
Safe Haven is out now on Blu-Ray and DVD!
