Now, the Sons of Anarchy ended last week. I have been a huge fan since the beginning, so I am wondering what I will do without it. I spent many days binge watching the series, and re-watched many of the episodes before the final season took place.
We are undoubtedly in the age of great television. It seems as though films have taken a second place, while shows have been getting better and better. However, we have lost some of the greatest TV shows within the last couple years. Amongst Sons, Breaking Bad and Dexter left our homes too soon… Sometimes, you wish a show could go on and on. In addition, Parks and Recreation and The Newsroom will be ending soon as well…
Mike has asked me to write this article for a couple years. However, due to shear laziness and selfishness, I pushed it off, promising I would write it when the show ended.
I went to the Sons of Anarchy set locations many times. Some days, you wouldn’t see anyone on site until the very end of the day. While there are numerous stories, I am just going to compile some of the best in one article.
At the time, Charlie Hunnam was just cast as Christian Grey in the new Fifty Shades of Grey. Paparazzi swamped the set to get a look at the star. If you have ever been on set, paparazzi and on-set locations do not mix. The biggest mishap would be being mistaken for a pap. However, one of the paparazzi said a few un-wise words towards a crewmember.
Tommy Flanagan walked over at the same time and he did not mix words. The pap was taunting Flanagan and Flanagan wasn’t afraid to let him know what he thought of him. Statements like, “You’re fucking scum! You just fucked yourself!” It was awesome. It was basically Chibs telling the pap he wasn’t going to get his shot. After that, some of the paps got the hint and left.
As soon as some of them drove off, Kim Coates, David LaBrava, Tommy Flanagan, Mark Boone Jr., and Charlie Hunnam went down the line signing all our items.
They signed everything. They took their time with everyone.
You should have seen the conveyor belt of items that ranged from Batman Begins, Sons Posters, Magazines, and Sons Jackets…
They seemed to be in a great mood. We talked briefly with each of them. I told Boone that he was great in Momento and Batman Begins and he thanked me and remarked on it for a moment.
Another day, we went to their camp about an hour away from where we live. It would have been almost near impossible if the cast wasn’t nice. At the time, Charlie had been changing signing wise. There were days where he didn’t want to do it. However, I still needed some of the additional cast to finish some cast items. My friend wanted to leave because it didn’t look hopeful. However, I advised that we wait at the end of the strip to ensure they see us as they past us.
Tommy Flanagan drove by and waved… David LaBrava got on his motorcycle soon after him. Boone and Coates drove through another exit. However, LaBrava beelined his motorcycle toward us. Alex still makes fun of me, as I did not move. I stood in place and the motorcycle was about a foot from me as he made the abrupt stop. He spoke to us for a few moments and signed everything. He placed everything on the motorcycle and handed each item back to us after he signed them. We thanked him and he went on his way…
Now, we waited for Hunnam a few minutes as he came back from finishing the scene. It was the day they announced that he was no longer a part in Fifty Shades. We thought it would never happen. We had heard his mood on set towards fans shifted. Also, I am sure the role of Jax took a toll on him as the season progressed.
We luckily moved to the other exit for a better shot. Sure enough, as soon as Charlie got on the bike, we called. He could have easily gone towards another exit. However, he headed our way and stopped his bike in front of us.
We talked to him about Pacific Rim and the hopes for a sequel. He claimed that he hopes that it happens. My friend talked about he had a new state of the art sound system to capture the full magnitude of Pacific Rim. He made a few remarks. Considering all that Fifty Shades stuff, he seemed relieved. He signed everything on his bike and took his time. We thanked him before he went on his way…
After numerous times of meeting the cast on set, I am pretty happy with the collection of stuff I acquired. Of course, you want the show to go on forever, however, by having these items, the show will go on forever in my household.
Thanks SOA… We will miss you!
