Star Trek Into Darkness Movie Review! My Brief Thoughts! What Do You Guys Think! Sound Off!
Star Trek Into Darkness is hitting theaters in the U.S. this week and The Lovely Erica and I had an opportunity to check the film out yesterday (more on that later). I figured I would take a quick second and share my thoughts on the film and see what you guys thought/think of the movie.
First off, I loved it. I thought that J.J. Abrams really has a pulse on these characters and blended in elements of what was original Star Trek cannon into this new film well. Not the same but not entirely different either.
I’m not going to go into plot per se, I think we all know what that is by now.
What I will say, is that I never saw Star Trek as an “action” franchise per se. There were always elements of action however, it was more of a thinking man’s action if you will. With J.J. at the helm it’s action first, think piece second. That’s not a bad thing, sometimes having messages as subtext works well.
All the classic characters are given their own little moment in this film. AND I love the relationship between Scotty and Kirk especially. Simon Pegg is so good as Scotty. Chris Pine is doing less Shatner here and is starting to settle into being Kirk. Zachary Quinto’s Spock is WAY More emotional than Leonard Nimoy’s Spock ever was. I like the anger, I like the emotion, it might need to be scaled a little bit.
Minor quibbles… Chekov? Clearly no one knew what to do with him. Let’s toss him in engineering! Sulu gets slightly more but not much. Bones needs to integrated better into the core three. They need his human reasoning.
Those are minor things. Overall Star Trek Into Darkness is really really excellent and I think you guys are going to love it.
Soooooooo….
Let me know what you guys thought? Sound off!

I thought that this was one of the best Star Trek films to come out in a while. Well done!
I like it, I agree that that Spock was a little too much, “Emotion on the sleeve” but still very cool.
I think the action was a nice shot for the series
You know, in all honesty, I liked a lot of it. I thought that it was different enough but stayed on par with the original Trek. All in all 3.5/4 stars
It was in a word… superb! JJ Is a great filmmaker and I don’t care what the haters say… it was a great film in line with the classic Trek films!
Classic trek! Nice mix of action and old school fun! When did uhura become so kick ass?
i know that i am excited to see the movie! i cannot wait! i was pleased with the first one and i am looking forward to this one. will keep you posted!
As a big fan of the 2009 movie, I just didn’t care as much for this one.
First off, a lot of the drama was incredibly forced. I hate when he has his characters trying to shout over each other, which happens several times in this film. Seasoned, trained “officers” arguing like spoiled brats. Lets continue yelling at our commanding officers! And while we’re at it, why don’t we air our personal dirty laundry during the mission to add more drama and tension!
So much of the action felt like the writers have played too many video games. And don’t get me started on the numerous plot holes!
It was a fun, noisy throw-away summer movie with no heart. Sorry, but copying the best parts of previous Trek movies isn’t good “character development”. Actually, most of the relationships feel really, really forced.
JJ isn’t much of an “actor’s director”. He’s great at spectacle, and great at advancing the story. But he isn’t very good at characters and allowing them to “breathe”. So much of the dialogue and action seemed very “paint-by-numbers” (Okay, now it’s _______ characters turn to have their moment!)
Alice Eve’s character was almost a total waste. The best character’s cameo was almost pointless, and seemed to be made with the understanding that they would only appear if they got to do it sitting down.
The plot “twists” and reveals were so incredibly predictable. Every. Single. One.
And Chris Pine. What happened? He was terrible in this movie! At no time does he lead you to believe he can command a ship. He’s just a loud-mouthed braggart. Sad to say, but he makes me actually miss Shatner! And I’m not a big Shatner-fan. I think if Pine tried to infuse a little more Shatner in his performance(only a little bit, mind you), he would have been better. But his performance isn’t as good as the 2009 film.
Cumberbatch’s performance was incredible, but the material seemed disappointing. Even with the plot twists, JJ & the writers didn’t give us enough to care about the character.
Again, it was fun. But it has no heart, and was full of weak, cliched writing. Too much spectacle, not enough spark.
I liked it better than the first J.J. version, only because I knew what to expect this time out. Cumberbatch’s voice is sex!!!!! It was a lot of fun and can’t wait to see it again!
I agree with Brian. The first film was the best. Cumberbatch was the best this about the movie but…….come on JJ, now that we have an alternate Trek universe, do you really have to rewrite the entire Trek history and “ignore” the original franchise and movie series? There’s one pivitol scene near the end of the movie. I think you know which one I mean. It’s a scene between Kirk and Spock. I cringed and was pretty upset that they “redid” that same plot point when it was 100 times better in the original movie. Like I said Cumberbatch is good and the best thing about the movie but at least JJ give him another name. The original actor that portrayed him IS that iconic character and will always be that character. JJ be more original in your story telling in the next Trek movie for the future. Mike, also agree Chekove was an idiot in this movie and should have had moe to do. Also didn’t like Scotty’s sidekick. Kind of lame.
All in all it had it’s flaws but was entertaining just the same.
