The Bridge Season 1
This gripping crime thriller set on the U.S.-Mexico border has emerged as one of TV’s most acclaimed new shows. When a murder victim is discovered on the bridge connecting El Paso and Juarez, detective Sonya Cross (Diane Kruger) must work with her Mexican counterpart, Marco Ruiz (Demián Bichir), to catch a serial killer terrorizing both sides of the border. But their investigation will uncover shocking secrets and relentless danger that neither of them could possibly have imagined. The Bridge is a co-production of Shine America and FX Productions. In celebration of the show’s Blu-ray and DVD releases, we present to you the top 5 things you need to know about The Bridge.
*Peabody Award, 2014
1. The part of Detective Marco Ruiz is not Demián Bichir’s first American role.
Demián Bichir was a very successful actor in Mexico before finding footing in American entertainment. Bichir actually moved to New York, and later L.A., to pursue an acting career but couldn’t find any work. He decided to go back to Mexico where he was part of many popular telenovelas. Sexo, pudor y lágrimas (1999) proved to be his Mexican movie breakout after it became the number one film in the history of the country’s cinema. Bichir widened his American audience by playing the corrupt Tijuana mayor, Esteban Reyes, in the Showtime series Weeds (2008). He became only the second Mexican actor (Anthony Quinn being the first) to receive an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role nomination for his performance in A Better Life (2011).
2. Diane Kruger wanted to be a ballerina.
Diane Kruger had young aspirations to be a ballerina while she was living in her home country of Germany. She successfully auditioned for the Royal Ballet School in London and was unfortunately forced into early retirement when she sustained a bad injury. She went on to pursue a modeling and acting career and began winning big roles in movies like Troy (2004), Inglorious Basterds (2009), Unknown (2011), and The Host (2013).
3. The Bridge remake deals with a deeper rift than that of the Scandinavian original.
The location of the show was changed to the American/Mexican border compared to the Swedish/Dutch border in the original Bron (2011). The El Paso/Ciudad Juarez locations were chosen so that the story could borrow and play out from real events and issues concerning the Mexican-American border. One of the main differences between the two versions is the amount and level of discord between the United States and Mexico; the cultural divide is in real life so much greater than its Scandinavian counterpart. The New York Times Mexico correspondent Damien Cave believes that The Bridge will be the show to make Americans think of Mexico in a different way. The Bridge helps “explain a place that neither Mexico nor the United States understands that well, and that’s the border.”
4. Executive producer and writer Meredith Stiehm has a slew of popular and successful dramas under her belt.
Stiehm was the creator and executive producer of the great drama series Cold Case, which had a prosperous seven-year long stint on CBS. She received three Emmy nominations for her writing on NYPD Blue and ER. During her time as a writer and executive producer for Homeland, she saw the show win an Emmy, Golden Globe, WGA, and Peabody Award in the Best Drama Series categories. With such a talented and experienced person at the helm, The Bridge has already won several awards and it’s certainly on its way to many more.
5. The Bridge returns for an all-new season July 9 on FX.
Nine months later, a new and even more suspenseful season arrives. Fans of the show have waited long enough and will finally get to see what has been happening with Detectives Sonya Cross and Marco Ruiz.
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment presents The Bridge coming to Blu-ray and DVD on June 24.
