TV Heartbeat 2014 Emmy Nominations! Who Got The Love? Who Got The Cold Shoulder? The Worst Misses!!
You take the good
You take the bad
You take them both and there you have…
The 2014 Emmy nominations!
As with any year, the Television Academy got some things right and missed the boat on others. Pretty typical, right? Here’s the lowdown and also a list of nominees!
The good:
Game of Thrones had the most nominations with 19 which included nods to Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey and Diana Rigg. (Yeah!)
Fargo got a lot of love with 18 nominations with both Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton in the best actor category as well as Allison Tolman and Colin Hanks.
17 nominations for American Horror Story: Coven bolstered with 5 acting nominations for the ladies!
The Normal Heart and Breaking Bad had 16 nominations each. The Normal Heart scores 6 of those for its various cast members.
Both Woody Harrelson and Mathew McConaughey were recognized for True Detective. (The chemistry between the two of them really made the show.)
The bad:
Tatiana Maslany was worthy of a nomination. She shows more range and depth than all the other actresses since she has 7 nuanced characters to play in Orphan Black. The show was new last year so she probably wasn’t very familiar to voters so they put her on the cover of Emmy magazine. And yet…sigh! The 19,000 Television Academy members missed her. What’s wrong with you people?!?!?! Watch those screeners!!!
The Good Wife earned acting nods for Julianna Marguilles, Christine Baranski, and Josh Charles, not but for best series.
Andre Braugher earned the only major nod for Brooklyn Nine-Nine
The interesting:
Moving Shameless from the drama to the comedy category paid off with a nomination for William H. Macy
Downton Abbey continued to inspire a lot of love even though it was a weak year. But everyone (inexplicably) loves Lady Mary so she and the gang walked away with 12 nods – as many as True Detective, Sherlock: His Last Vow (they submitted Sherlock as a movie and not a series this season) and Orange Is the New Black.
HBO was the most recognized network (not shocking) with 99 nominations. The next three most honored networks were CBS (47 nominations), NBC (46 nods) and then FX (45 nominations). ABC was a distant 5th place with 37 nominations. Thank you Fargo!!

Congrats to Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell, and Mark Ruffalo – YAY!!!
No love for Sons of Anarchy!
But still an interesting mix for once, a lot of newcomers which is nice!
Also excited that Lena Headey got a nom! I heart her!
Funny that nearly none of the Emmy Consideration people got any 🙁
Are you kidding, Silicon Valley! Orange is the new black, House of cards, Ricky gervais, they all got love and there were surprises with SV and RG
I think OITNB and House of Cards were front runners, not underdogs so they were expected – Netflix has certainly built some cred.
Ricky was a surprise and I think people were hoping for SV (I wasn’t fond of it). Agree with the Lena nomination! Oddly enough, being raped was one way for a couple of the nominees to earn a spot (shudder).
So it’s good we got a few names to mix things up, but also a bunch of holdovers where people got lazy and didn’t actually consider the show. In no way does Michelle Dockery beat Tatiana Maslany this season. Lady Mary was so uninteresting I concluded all her suitors were clearly after her money and not her…
If you’ve ever seen Derek, Ricky’s nom came as no surprise.
