TV Heartbeat! Childhood’s End and Expanse debuts! Outlander gets Golden Globe love!
With most shows heading into their winter hiatus, we have a few specials and some big Syfy shows this week!
Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors is not her drag version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. (Rats.) It’s an autobiography of Dolly’s childhood when she was around 9 years old. Wholesome family bonding time.
If you’re looking for some music, NBC has Michael Buble’s Christmas in Hollywood tonight and Adele in New York City on Monday.
Syfy has two big debuts this week and both are based on books and both go back to classic science fiction stories in space.
Childhood’s End is a mini-series based on the Arthur C. Clarke book. Earth has been invaded by the mysterious Overlords, who bring us peace as mankind slowly loses its identity and culture. Charles Dance plays the ambassador for the Overlords in a cast which also includes Mike Vogel, Daisy Betts, Yael Stone, Julian McMahon and Colm Meaney.
The Expanse is a new series and is based on the series of books by James S. A. Corey. This world is 200 years in our future when we’ve started to colonize the solar system. A missing woman triggers an investigation into a huge conspiracy that could decide the fate of humans. Check out my interview with the cast (Thomas Jane, Steven Strait) and creators to find out more about this genre-mashup.
The award-winning Transparent begins its sophomore season on Amazon while Fargo wraps up its second season on FX. While Fargo remains good this season, I didn’t love the characters as much as last season. Fear not, Fargo will be back again and this time, they will move to present day.
Tonight: Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors (NBC), Michael Buble’s Christmas in Hollywood (NBC), Toy Story 20th Anniversary (ABC)
Friday: Ridiculous Six (Netflix), Transparent season premiere (Amazon)
Sunday: Friday the 13th marathon (Epix)
Monday: The Expanse debut (Syfy), Childhood’s End debut (Syfy), Fargo season finale (FX), Adele Live in New York City (NBC)
Tuesday: The Expanse new night (Syfy),

Syfy announced that the upcoming season of Bitten will be the last. I recently caught up with this series and am looking for the next season so this is sad news. The cast is trying to encourage fans to tweet #Howl4more to build support for another season.
Award Talk
We are most definitely in the thick of award season with the Screen Actors’ Guild (SAG) and Golden Globe nominations this week. These awards are from two very different groups (actors vs. foreign press) so their nominations differ a bit. The Golden Globes tend to reward new shows quicker while the SAG awards are pretty conservative. I haven’t seen a lot of the award-contender movies yet, but the TV nominations were both interesting and not.
- Outlander is a Golden Globe nominee for best drama series, best actress (Caitriona Balfe) and best supporting actor (Tobias Menzies)!!! Yeah!! Aside from missing Sam Heughan for best actor and America Ferrera’s best John Travolta impersonation while reading Caitriona’s name during the announcement, I couldn’t be happier with this.
- Tatiana Maslany isn’t nominated for either a SAG or Golden Globe this year so it looks like the award committees gave her the recognition last year and are moving on this year. Sadness.
- Mr. Robot scored a few nods with Rami Malek generating most of the attention.
- Fox had no SAG nominations, but scored a couple of Golden Globe nods for Empire.
- My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend had more Golden Globe nodes than the entire NBC network. (Rachel Bloom scored a best actress nom while NBC had none.)
- Lady Gaga can now call herself a Golden Globe nominee for best supporting actress (American Horror Story: Hotel).
- Netflix had the most SAG nominations thanks to Homeland, Orange is the New Black and their first movie, Beasts of No Nation.
- Hulu got its first nomination for Jason Reitman’s series, Casual.
- Mad Men got a bunch of SAG nominations, but only Jon Hamm scored a Golden Globe nod.
Stay tuned!

Interesting. SAG and Golden Globes are so different. TBH The Golden Globes are so irrelevant. SAG is a way better indication. Happy for Outlander and Mr. Robot. Two excellent shows.
The Golden Globes get a lot of attention so it’s good for new shows/actors to break out and get some notice. Yes, the crediblity is suspect (Madonna has Golden Globe for best actress), but hopefully it paves the Emmy way for Outlander and Mr. Robot next year.
Dolly Parton has a tv movie! dear lord! I do love Jean Smart on fargo! I think the SAG Awards got it more right than the Golden Globes. What? The Globes have 100 people or so voting? Come on. It’s stupid.
