TV Heartbeat! More Debuts featuring Star Wars, Arrow and Flash! Renewals and Early Health Reports on the New Season!!
Did you keep up with all the premieres last week? Hang on, since there’s still more to come! CBS and Fox have more shows to premiere/debut and The CW starts up its programming next week!
NBC launches a pair of new comedies tomorrow – both shows feature obnoxious people: Bad Judge and A to Z which features a newly formed couple. The line up is a far cry from ye ol’ “Must See TV” days of yore!
Fox will go serious with Gracepoint – the American adaptation of a terrific UK series. Starring David Tennant (Doctor Who, Harry Potter) and Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) as detectives investigating the death of a young boy in a small town. (Not the feel-good show of the night.) The ending has been changed from the UK series so don’t bother looking up the UK version (also starring David Tennant) for the solution to the murder.
For something more sudsy, The Vampire Diaries and Reign will start their seasons. Reign will begin with a little plague to spice up Mary’s day.
Can’t wait for Star Wars Episode VII? Well, there’s some Star Wars on Disney to whet your appetite with Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion which kicks off the new Star Wars Rebels series on Disney XD. Set after Episode III and the establishment of the Empire, we’ll be introduced to a host of new characters (Jedi, droids, etc…)
Fox completes its Sunday night line up with Bob’s Burgers and the debut of Mulaney, starring John Mulaney as a stand-up comic named Mulaney. Echoes of Seinfeld in this premise, right? But this Mulaney (in the TV show) is a struggling comic trying to make it in the biz and gets a big break when he starts working for a wacky game show host (Martin Short) in the interim.
The Strain wraps up its first season with Eph and Fet out to take out the Master. A hit for FX, the show will be back next season. I had a chance to talk to Kevin Durand (Fet) so stay tuned for some news straight from the big guy!
Flash…ah ha!!!!! (Some theme songs live in infamy and Flash Gordon’s theme by Queen will always live on!) After a great arc last fall on Arrow, Barry Allen will finally get his own show. While this is from the same producers as Arrow, The Flash will have a different, less broody tone. Also, look for him to visit Starling City as we know there is definitely a crossover happening in November.
Arrow will be back as well with a new Big Bad since Slade is locked in a box on an island somewhere. Look for Oliver to go on a date with Felicity since the fans ship the pair of them like crazy.
Things get freaky when American Horror Story’s latest incarnation heads to the big top.

Health check
Summer is officially over and the nets are announcing the renewals for some of their summer shows! Big Brother will be watching crazy naked people for at least 2 more summers. Syfy will have another summer of Dominion and Defiance and the Maids will continue to be Devious on Lifetime. ABC will host more Mistresses next summer (sans Alyssa Milano who refused to re-locate for filming) and, as previously mentioned, FX shows You’re the Worst and Married will move to FXX, the more comedy focused-channel.
But what’s happening with all the new shows? Well, How to Get Away with Murder killed the competition with great ratings AND the biggest DVR audience ever. The new show is the most watched drama and one of the highest rated shows on ABC. ABC is definitely saying “Thank God it’s Thursday!”
That’s welcome news for ABC who had a rough year last year. So far, this year has been pretty good with its quality, laugh-heavy Wednesday which scored big, including the newest edition, Black-ish. Forever has been strong so far, doing better than expected in many ways.
But for every success story, there are always shows in jeopardy. Red Band Society is coming in below expectations and is in need of some healing (calling Dr. McAndrew!). The Mysteries of Laura is pulling in a decent of viewers, but is really weak in pulling in a young audience. Revenge’s audience is pretty low and perennial bubble show, The Mindy Project may see that bubble pop.
Remember that this is just the first week!
Here’s a look at the TV Heartbeat Check Up chart which shows how the shows stand! Keep in mind that the status can change weekly and they can shift as DVR results come in. Support your shows! Make sure you watch your DVR/video on demand within three days to have the greatest impact!
Stay tuned!
