TV Heartbeat! Updates On the Health of Your Favorite Shows! Crossover! A TV Threeway Coming Up!

Alright folks! We’ve just got a handful of new shows premiering this week so it’s a good chance to start to sort and catch up on all the shows that have debuted so far! But before you hole up with your DVR for the week, check out a few notables…

HBO will debut Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways, a documentary that focuses NOT on the Foo Fighters, but on different American cities and their musical landmarks and style. The first episode spotlights Chicago (my home!). To celebrate, the Foo Fighters are holding a premiere party concert at the Cubby Bear (which is featured in the episode). Tickets are on sale today, but you can also watch the concert which will be streamed on HBO’s Facebook page.

This week, TNT will premiere the series version of the Transporter. This is what’s called an acquired show – it’s actually European and TNT has bought the US rights. It’s been successful enough that they are already working on the second season so let’s see if US audiences will be transported as well!

The Millers debuts this Monday after a bit of CBS schedule musical chairs. In an effort to keep their geeks together, CBS kept The Big Bang Theory and Scorpion back to back on their schedule for several weeks. Now The Millers will make its debut and squeeze in between the two shows.

The honor of being the first new series to get a full season order is…(drum roll!) Gotham! Yes, we’ll get a full 22 hours on the origin story of the rise of crime in Gotham. One of the few bright spots on the Fox schedule, this full season order was a no-brainer for Fox. Artistically, I’m hoping the show settles into a groove soon since I find it somewhat entertaining, but I’m not hooked. I think the show lacks an overall purpose/theme since it’s a lot of bad people wallowing about and it’s hard to cheer on anyone. Robin Lord Taylor is terrific as Oswald Cobblepot, but I’m not on board with Sean Pertwee’s angry Alfred. Still, it’s tough to get the tone and characters write on an original take of a familiar story, and enough people are watching — something that Fox needs since lots of veteran shows are losing viewers.

Someone who is most definitely not lacking for viewers? American Horror Story: Freak Show just scored FX’s highest ratings. Ever. Once we say “goodbye to the Freak Show,” (Side Show is back on Broadway this season!!) we’ll have at least another American Horror Story on the way next year!

The walker virus continues to spread with gonzo ratings for The Walking Dead and another non-surprise renewal for season 6! Roughly as many people watched the season 5 premiere as the sum of the folks watching Fox, ABC and CBS COMBINED.

The pirates of Black Sails will continue to pillage for another season! We’re months away from the debut of season 2 (in January), but Starz has, once again, approved the next season without waiting for ratings. Shows a lot of confidence in this show! I’ll have more on Black Sails season 2 soon!

Elsewhere, summer shows Under the Dome and WGN America’s Manhattan will be back again with their season 3 and season 2 renewals (respectively).

How are the rest of the fall shows doing? Here’s an update on where the ratings stand and their renewal status. If you’re wondering why some shows don’t have great ratings, but may still be renewed, it’s likely because they are in their third season which means one more complete season and they can sell the syndication rates which means mucho dinero. Ergo both Chicago Fire and Nashville have great chances for renewal although their ratings are in very different places.

Crystal Ball

The galaxy is going to seem a bit smaller! Guardians of the Galaxy will be getting their own TV show! No, we won’t see Chris Pratt suiting up for this weekly show since its going to be animated. Disney XD will debut the new series next year.

For something a bit sooner, gear up for a whole bunch of crossovers as networks have a whole slew of them coming up. Notice how it’s a combination of newer and veteran shows each time? Yeah, that’s not an accident!

  • Scorpion + NCIS: Los AngelesNCIS:LA’s Linda Hunt will appear in an episode of Scorpion on October 28th.
  • The Flash + Arrow – While we saw Oliver pop in on Central City during the pilot for The Flash, this crossover is a more integrated story line.  Look for these episodes to drop around Thanksgiving.
  • Chicago Fire + Law & Order: SVU + Chicago PD – This is the most ambitious TV threeway yet! The story will center on a child porn ring that gets discovered during Chicago Fire and then the story spreads to New York (for SVU) and then wraps up in Chicago. This epic will begin on November 11 and wrap up on the 12.

PD - Voight night
