Book Beat on the Wicked Fox blog tour! My favorite foxes in pop culture!

On June 25th, Wicked Fox, the debut novel from Kat Cho hits book shelves! This fantasy is set in modern day Korea and features a gumiho — a nine-tail fox with special powers. I started thinking about other foxes in pop culture so here’s my list of nine favorite foxes (one for each tail of the gumiho!)

1. Miyoung in Wicked Fox by Kat Cho

An addictive fantasy-romance set in modern-day Seoul.

Eighteen-year-old Gu Miyoung has a secret–she’s a gumiho, a nine-tailed fox who must devour the energy of men in order to survive. Because so few believe in the old tales anymore, and with so many evil men no one will miss, the modern city of Seoul is the perfect place to hide and hunt.

But after feeding one full moon, Miyoung crosses paths with Jihoon, a human boy, being attacked by a goblin deep in the forest. Against her better judgment, she violates the rules of survival to rescue the boy, losing her fox bead–her gumiho soul–in the process.

Jihoon knows Miyoung is more than just a beautiful girl–he saw her nine tails the night she saved his life. His grandmother used to tell him stories of the gumiho, of their power and the danger they pose to men. He’s drawn to her anyway. When he finds her fox bead, he does not realize he holds her life in his hands.

With murderous forces lurking in the background, Miyoung and Jihoon develop a tenuous friendship that blossoms into something more. But when a young shaman tries to reunite Miyoung with her bead, the consequences are disastrous and reignite a generations-old feud . . . forcing Miyoung to choose between her immortal life and Jihoon’s.

2. Bai Qian in Ten Miles Peach of Blossoms (aka  Eternal Love)

Foxes are more prominent in Asian stories so I had to include Bai Qian from one of my favorite Chinese dramas, Three Lives Three Worlds: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms.

Bai Qian a white nine-tailed fox and the future leader of the fox clan. The drama follows her from a mischievous youth until she’s a powerful goddess. Along the way, she meets Ye Hua and they fight and love and fight again through three lifetimes.

Super popular (online views of this series is over 20 billion views — yes, that’s billion with a ‘B’), its epic and heartbreaking and funny and gorgeous. It’s available on Netflix as Eternal Love, on YouTube and Viki as Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms.

3. The Fox in Fox in Socks

One of the first foxes I can remember is a more traditional fox, even if this fox wears human clothing! Let’s hear it for Dr. Seuss’s Fox in Socks!

4. Tod from The Fox and the Hound

Disney has a history of featuring foxes so let’s include Tod, the only fox on this list that doesn’t wear clothing.

5. Robin Hood and Maid Marion from Disney’s Robin Hood

This Disney classic features foxes as the dashing Robin Hood and lovely Maid Marion. Pants are optional.

6. Nick from Zootopia

A more modern fox, Nick Wilde from Zootopia (voiced by Jason Bateman) is definitely a sly fox. A small-time con man, he runs a couple of scams until he gets entangled in by-the-book Officer Judy Hops’ case. Pants are still only optional.

7. Fox Mulder from The X-Files

OK. So few people actually call him Fox, but it is his first name. This fox isn’t sly so much as spooky.

8. Lucious Fox from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy

Christian Bale’s Batman wouldn’t have his gadgets without Lucious Fox, the head of Wayne Enterprise’s Applied Sciences division. He  equips Bruce Wayne with all kinds of gadgets and Batmobiles on the sly. But this fox also serves as Bruce Wayne’s conscious so he’s more than just a crafty fox.

9. Michael J Fox

‘nuff said.

I know there are a lot more than 9 foxes out there so here are a few honorable mentions:

  • Mi-ho from My Girlfriend is a Gumiho – She’s the fox that inspired Kat Cho to write Wicked Fox. This Korean drama is a bit harder to find, so I haven’t seen it yet, but it’s got great word of mouth.
  • Megan Fox
  • Fantastic Mr Fox
  • Redd Fox
  • Foxy Brown

Author Bio

Kat Cho used to hide books under the bathroom sink and then sneak in there to read after bedtime. Her parents pretended not to know. This helped when she decided to write a dinosaur time-travel novel at the tender age of nine. Sadly, that book was not published. She currently lives and works in NYC and spends her free time trying to figure out what kind of puppy to adopt.
