TV Heartbeat! Super Bowl Sunday! New stuff from Alan Rickman and Michael Jackson!
TV is relatively quiet this week since it’s all about the big game, the Super Bowl of Super Bowls!
Are you ready for some football?
Or some (hopefully) entertaining commercials? Yes, it’s Super Bowl weekend so get ready for roughly 12 hours of football programming on CBS. Lady Gaga will open with the national anthem and Coldplay and Beyonce will perform at halftime.
The Super Bowl commercials will feature Ryan Reynolds (aka Deadpool), Seth Rogan, Amy Schumer and the voice of Alan Rickman for the upcoming Alice Through the Looking Glass trailer.
If football isn’t your thing, there’s always the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet or the Kitten Bowl on Hallmark.
Oh, and it’s Carolina Panthers vs. Denver Broncos.
Spike Lee’s documentary on Michael Jackson will debut this week on Showtime. Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall features some rare footage of the entertainer.
HBO is debuting a new animated series, but this one isn’t for the kiddies. It’s sort of an adult Look Who’s Talking but with animals in the city. The voice list is long and varied with Wanda Sykes, Jessica Chastain, Molly Shannon and more.
Tonight: Madoff debut (ABC), Young & Hungry debut (Freeform), Baby Daddy season premiere (Freeform)
Friday: Sleepy Hollow moves (Fox), Animals (HBO), Vice (HBO), Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall (Showtime)
Sunday: Super Bowl (CBS), Puppy Bowl XII (Animal Planet), Kitten Bowl (Hallmark)
Monday: Gotham returns (Fox), Lucifer moves (Fox)
Health Check
Fox is having a great month with X-Files and Lucifer holding onto good ratings in their second week.
Fox can also official say Grease is the word since their first live musical hit huge ratings and a strong critical response, despite the lack of big name stars. Strong direction with some tweaks to the book and a crazy good camera crew helped to keep the story moving even though its values are still rooted from a different era. Julianne Hough proved she can belt, even if she couldn’t act well enough to make Sandy interesting. It’s always great to hear Aaron Tveit sing, even if he looked like he should be teaching, not attending high school. Matching Stockard Channing’s beloved Rizzo was a tough order for Vanessa Hudgens who surprised many by how strong she was, especially when considering her father died hours earlier.
Fox’s next live event musical is an original based on The Passion and then they will focus on a live Rocky Horror Picture Show. Yes, Rocky is being re-worked to make it a bit more family-friendly. We’re all filled with antici….(say it!)…pation!
Stay tuned!
