Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie:

On Saturday, September 29th, I got to go to an advanced screening of “Frankenweenie” at the El Capitan. I’m not gonna lie, while I love Tim Burton’s style it’s very rare I like his films on first watching. Usually I have to see them a couple of times before I can appreciate them fully and sometimes even then it’s just the visuals I love not necessarily the story. I LOOOOOOOOVED “Frankenweenie” and am utterly shocked by that.

I mean, I expected it to be cute but I didn’t expect it to tug at my heartstrings so much. I admit it, I cried, I’m not ashamed. It was just so sweet. It was also hysterical and a fabulous nod to all the classic horror films. I’m shocked that a 28 yr. old short could be turned into such a great film, but you can tell there was a lot of heart and soul that went into it.

The story is your basic “boy and his dog” tale but then it takes a wide, creepy and sometimes gross turn. I think we all know the basic plot, and let’s face it, a kid digging up his dead dog and trying to bring it back to life is icky. I mean the kid robbed a grave, took apart a corpse, sewed it back together and then electrocuted it, and I think everyone in that audience found it adorable. Then we all laughed as the other kids went about digging up their dead pets. We are sick people and I love it.

This is the quick, irreverent and sappy Burton I love. Yeah the themes are dark but it’s a feel good movie, which are always the ones I enjoy the most. Like “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” vs . “Sleepy Hollow”, the first is utterly twisted but a lot of fun while the second is cool to look at but not fun.

Victor and his dog Sparky aren’t even my favorite characters. There’s a lot to choose from but for me the best is Weird Girl and her cat, Mr. Whiskers. Honestly that cat is super freaky. Is it mean to say that’s how I see cat lovers when they start to go on and on about their pet? They get that wide-eyed hypnotized face like they’re in a trance while the cat just stares at me. I mean it was spot on. Ok, I’m mostly kidding ;P

“Frankenweenie” isn’t going to make you think or shock you with it’s twists or blow you away with huge explosions, but what it will do is make you smile and have fun. You’ll walk out of the theater feeling a little lighter and possibly have a hankering to go rent some Bela Lugosi or Boris Karlof films.
