Me:
I met Natasha during my freshman year in college. She totally got me hooked on Scrubs. I remember we use to watch reruns of Scrubs after a night out with the girls. It always brought us such joy and laughter. We were completely in LOVE with J.D. (Zach Braff) & Turk (Donald Faison), not to mention their unbelievably adorable bromance which made us a little jealous.
Natasha:
I’m a huge of the show Scrubs in general and Zach Braff (J.D.) in particular. So when I found out that the set of Scrubs was in North Hollywood – a mere hop, skip, and jump away from me – I was super psyched. My boss had been the one to reveal the set location to me; we were having a casual conversation about our mutual enjoyment of the show.
“You do know Scrubs is filmed at the North Hollywood Medical Center, right?” she asked me. Her voice was so indifferent that at first I thought my boss was joking. For what Scrubs fan could utter those words without excitement in every syllable, without wonder in every facial expression?
But when I learned that she was, in fact, quite serious, I was filled with complete joy. The Scrubs set…just a short drive away. It was inconceivable. I immediately called Awesome Anushika, who I knew was a pro at celeb-stalking as well as a fellow Scrubs fan, and we plotted our expedition.
Me:
When I received a message from Natasha about the Scrubs set, I was more than excited to join her. I was back in LA for my summer break and thought it was the perfect time to go for a visit. We met up and had no trouble spotting the building. We actually saw the hospital all the way from the freeway. It was unreal. I couldn’t believe we were living so close to all the action. We parked the car and started to walk towards to entrance. I was a little hesitant since it looked totally deserted and creepy.
Natasha:
When we first approached the gated complex of the hospital (no longer functional, of course), we tried to seek a way in. Unfortunately, the only entrance seemed to be blocked by a security guard. We decided not to risk being tackled for trying to jump the fence, and instead began conversing pleasantly with the security guard. We explained our love for the show Scrubs and our burning desire to explore the set. We smiled often and may have even batted our eyelashes. The security guard was charmed and allowed us to tour the premises. We jumped up and down and thanked him profusely.
Me:
We looked around to find a way in, but the whole place was heavily gated. I was a bit scared to approach the security station, but Natasha was brave enough for the both of us. After we asked for permission, I remember the older security guard said, “Okay, but you girls have to do one thing.” We both looked at each other with mixed expressions. Then he uttered the words that put the biggest smile on our faces, “You have to smile!” We instantly started laughing. I guess we both looked really tense and nervous.
Natasha:
“You know, if you had only come a few days earlier, you might have been able to actually watch them film the show,” said the security guard. “In fact, a few visitors have even been allowed to be extras. But they just finished filming for the season…you’re just a few days too late.”
Me:
NOOOOOOO!!!!! A little part of us just died. He asked the younger security guard to take us inside and show us around.
Natasha:
Anushika and I stared at each other with our mouths agape. Just a few days too late…If we had been there a few days earlier, we could have seen Zach Braff and the rest of the awesome Scrubs cast IN THE FLESH and maybe have even been extras in the show! The idea was tantalizing. But we tried to forget about what could I have been and focus on the present chance to explore the set.
Me:
Even though we missed out on seeing them in action, we were more than thrilled at the chance to venture the hallways and wards in the hospital. As we walked pass the parking lot, we caught a glimpse of the ambulance they used on the show. My excitement just kept growing and growing with every step.
Natasha:
As we wandered the empty hallways, I imagined the hustle and bustle of the Scrubs doctors and nurses wheeling patients through the hospital, and J.D. trailing after Dr. Cox.
Natasha:
As we approached the Sacred Heart doors I imagined J.D. bursting through them before stumbling over a trap the Janitor set for him.
Me:
As we walked around, my mind was completely racing. All those unforgettable moments were just flashing in and out. Every crack and corner had its own memory. You could almost see JD, Turk & Dr. Cox wandering around the halls.
Natasha:
As we explored the emergency entrance outside, I imagined J.D. riding in on Sasha, and Turk flipping J.D over when J.D tried to give Turk a hug to teach him how to be sensitive, and Janitor teaching them about Knife-Wrench (“For kids!”) .
Natasha:
As we reached the receptionist’s station, I imagined Laverne giving J.D. some of her attitude and preachiness…classic Laverne.
Me:
The crew pretty much cleaned up the place, but I was happy to see some remnants of the set. It was still Sacred Heart! =)
Natasha:
As we walked through the cafeteria, I imagined J.D., Elliott, Turk, Carla and the gang having lunch, discussing their various problems.
Natasha:
As we entered CoffeeBucks, I imagined Dr. Kelso catching a muffin.
Me:
If you are a fan of this show, I’m pretty sure you guys remember the time J.D. rode his bike into a water hole and came out through another. They filled those holes up, but they are still visible. They hired a stunt double to do the trick. I never imagined they actually dug a hole right in front of the hospital. It really did happen! =D
Natasha:
Anushika and I found an empty Coffee Bucks cup lying around…score! Perhaps J.D.’s lips brushed against it… And to our pleasant surprise, we found that even the props had a sense of humor! =) With all of the Scrubs scenes I imagined as I wandered through the set, you’d think I was J.D. =P It was a truly memorable day and I loved every minute of it!
Me:
We couldn’t resist taking a photo right up front before leaving the place and you could see we were quite giddy with excitement. I really wanted to stay longer and reenact some of the scenes with Natasha, but didn’t want to take advantage of the kindness of the security. It was definitely one of the best days ever. My very first time visiting a location and it couldn’t have gone any better. We weren’t rushed, so we took all the time we need to savor every little moment. We pretty much had the whole place to ourselves. Finding a Coffee Bucks cup was just the cherry on top. I can’t wait to meet Zach Braff one of these days and get it signed. Would 2014 be the year? Who knows, but I’m excited to find out.
