I’m feeling under the weather, under the gun and behind in everything… So what’s a fanboy to do? Head out for hours in the cold! Sigh… Only me. Still recovering from Wondercon-itis, yep, the annual sickness that comes with the aftermath of a con, I still decided to head out.
Why? Good question. Beck and Emily Deschanel. I need Emily to finish a couple Bones mini posters (love her!) and I’ve never even had a chance to meet Beck. I have this Black Tambourine picture disc, which is super rare. I found it really cheap and I’ve had it for years.
I arrived and saw MTF Contributor Paul. After he gives me a little shit for not getting his newest article up yet (I’m working on them guys! Yes, even yours Billy), we had time to chat, catch up and enjoy sitting in a freezing alley wind tunnel.
We were hoping to get everyone coming in but sadly, my hopes were getting dashed with every minute. There were only about 8-10 of us here, which is a crazy low number and a nice change of pace.
Emily Deschanel’s publicist came over and told us that she was running late but that she would bring her over after. I love that. So polite and respectful. We thanked her and continued to wait.
We saw Beck leaving after soundcheck and it looked like he was going to do it, but then went inside. Doh.
The wind, the cold, the sickness. I’m so cold, my hands are freezing and I’m shaking a little. Sigh…
I’ve been a fan of Beck’s ever since the 1990’s and growing up in the midwest. It seems like there was always a Beck song on the radio and if you haven’t seen him live, you need to check him out. He’s awesome. Black Tambourine is my favorite song of his, but as you all know, he has a lot.
The taping started and we hear Don Rickles on the show. Paul has an LP for him and really is hoping sarcastically that he’ll come over. Let’s not hold our breathe. The man is 87 (84? 85?) Anyway, he’s old.
The sun is setting and the wind is picking up. Plus, we all had to move with the barricade because an animal truck is coming in. Only Hollywood. Of course this happens as Emily Deschanel is coming out!
We finally get the barricade in place, just as Emily walks over to us.
Super nice as can be. She’s a tad chilly as well and the wind of course is picking up. Emily Deschanel signs and signs. They are trying to keep it to one each, but with the small crowd I got two and I think pretty much everyone else did as well.
No pushing, no shoving, it was calm. If this was summer it would have been perfect! Emily Deschanel was so nice. Seriously. She was really awesome.
And then a few of us went to the other side hoping we could catch Beck.
We listened to the concert. It was really frakkin good. When he left, though, they were moving cables and he left through the middle. Dammit.
So, we ran back to the other side, where there were about 25 people now waiting because the concert let out. Still, it was a chill crowd.
After another 15 minutes of waiting, out comes Beck. We yelled, and he came right on over. Super chill. He did photos, he signed. And pretty much everyone was really polite.
I asked him to sign my picture disc in silver and silver he was like, “what is that?” I said, “it’s the Black Tambourine promo picture disc.” and he said, “Oh, I thought it was a drum head…”
I think it’s odd when people don’t recognize their own promo materials, but I’m sure everyone sees a lot of them. He signed it (kind small though) and I was also able to get a quick photo as well.
He stayed forever taking pictures with the fans and being really nice. I was really impressed.
Until next time kids…
